Priebus: Hopefuls must hit ‘thresholds’ to join Republican debates

Reince Priebus, Republican National Committee chairman, says that potential presidential contenders will have to poll above certain levels to earn a spot in the GOP debates.

In a radio interview on the "Hugh Hewitt Show" Monday, the conservative host asked Priebus how the debates would work if there were 20 candidates vying to be heard.

“You can’t,” Priebus said. “You can’t do 20 people. … You have to have certain thresholds in place, so you have to be at 1 percent of the vote in Iowa, and that threshold can move like a slide rule based on the proximity to the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primaries, just like it did before.”

There are at least 14 candidates still considering a run for the White House on the GOP side, including 2012 nominee Mitt Romney, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Sen. Rick Santorum (Pa.), Dr. Ben Carson, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Anyone know if this is the usual method of selecting/eliminating potential candidates for the debates?

It seems subjective, especially if the poll numbers are manipulated.

it has always been the case, which is why Ron Paul has been left out of many debates in the past.

The fact is there are always a bunch of total nut jobs that run for president and you cant give all of them a microphone.

Both Howard Dean and Ron Paul did well in online polls (which were subject to manipulation).

The Democrats woke up to that and rushed Dean off the stage in 2004 with reports of a "scream".

Well, what the hell difference will it make.

Evidently, Mr. Priebus decided it was okay to have people like CNN and MSNBC as moderators for 6 of our 9 debates.

Good grief. Is there nobody in the republican party with a spine any more. I’m so fed up, I’m -— this close to changing my registration.

Screw the debates. Candidates who are worth electing will avoid them (except in controlled circumstances).

Running for President allows a mechanism for bribes and payoffs to be established.

With a campaign account, money can be deposited and spent as the candidate sees fit. After the candidate ends a campaign, the money stays in the account he or she controls.

So if someone wants a payoff for ‘services rendered’, all they have to do is run for president as a diversion and the payoff is legit.

Both Howard Dean and Ron Paul did well in online polls (which were subject to manipulation).

Ron Paul finished third in 2012, behind Rick Santorum in total delegates to the convention, and ahead of Newt Gingrich. No other candidates won significant delegates (there were odd write ins).

Ron Paul was subject to a lot of GOPe trickery in both 2008 and 2012. I attended the Washington Caucus's in 2008 and Paul had a lot of support in our Caucus, as apparently he did statewide as well. Despite this the Committee Chairs of the Counties conspired to deliver the delegates to McCain.

I'm enjoying Ted Cruz supporters trash-talking Ron Paul!!

Do you think that Cruz can win 25% of the vote in Washington, as Ron Paul did in 2012 caucus votes? Do you think that will result in him winning delegates? Do you think that all the cheating used against Paul by the GOPe will not be used against Cruz in 2016?

Think again!

BTW: I was *not* a Ron Paul supporter in either year, but I was still appalled by what happened, including the State party not supporting GOP candidates who won the nomination but had supported Paul (against Democrats).

If Cruz were smart he'd hire some people who worked on Paul's campaign to help them on the blocking and tackling. Paul did way better in 2012 because he learned eough rules to fight the cheaters at their cheating games.

FUGLY!

Are they going to let Democrat anchors frame the debates again?

I think we’ll be ok, we don’t need to water down our vote too much; we have a chance to water down the establishment vote for a change.

Hopefully he’ll have the sense to insist that WE pick the moderators this time; rather than the enemy picking them for us.

It’s simple. Do or do not. Either stay and assist/empower evil or leave and fight against it. Plenty on FR are all the willing to help further evil with more RINOs. You won’t be lonely if you stay. At this point, it should not be a question of ‘this close.’ Thats a Levin cop out and we see how his word is worthless on the issue.

My bet is that this is simply a way of eliminating Ted Cruz and his VP pick, Sarah Palin, pure and simple!!!

As a state delegate, and a Gingrich supporter, I too was appalled at the treatment of the Paul supporters at the convention. They are intelligent young people and the future of the republican party — if it has a future. It was shocking and disgusting they were shut out they way they were. And more than anything, I hated the steam roller tactics of the Romney people, in fact I found the Romney people so unlikeable and so repellent, I just could not vote for him. After Romney's shenanigans in the primaries, and the smug insulting appalling arrogance of his delegates, I just felt that there was not a dime's worth of difference between Romney and his people, and any corrupt democrat of your choosing. And by the way I don't feel any regrets about this two years later; I don't miss Romney at all. I just wish he would go away and find something else to do.

So, you think your self more clever than Senator Cruz... there is a long list of people in that category... it didn’t end well for most of them.

To answer your question, yes. I do expect Cruz to do better.

How about setting one threshold as the ability to win a general election? That would eliminate Romney and McCain.

Make another threshold the requirement that at least three people in the country recognize your name. That would eliminate john huntsman.

Can’t the Gop narrow it down to two and eliminate the drama - than focus on doing something for the nest two years to WIN.. Instead of bickering decide to limit the candidates to a bare minimum . Please no Mittens, Christie, Bush, Perry, Carson, Huckabee, Jindahl and Santorum. lets see five left Out of the five who else gets eliminated; Walker?, Paul?, Cruz?. kasich? or Pence? 3 Governors 2 Senators. decide soon and focus on developing the best solutions Who has the strongest backing can appeal to Conservatives and work with the moderate Republicans without alienating them -

I am saying go for the Conservative and work towards common values with the moderates Hope for the best

Conservative Yes but in work with the weaker not to make to many concessions

Sounds reasonable to me. Ted Cruz will be the ONLY Tea Party candidate, and the Establishment candidates can spend their time beating each other up.
