Selma and the Sanctimony of Liberals

The film's portrayal of LBJ has the left up in arms. It’s always interesting to witness the sanctimony of liberals (usually Democrats) when their narratives of history are challenged by those they say they “helped.” Thus it has happened with the movie Selma, which has focused negative attention on President Lyndon Johnson

...

in The FBI and Martin Luther King, Jr., Garrow reported on the delight Johnson took in listening to the surveillance tapes of King (whom Garrow approvingly presented as a radical and socialist). Garrow wrote, “When one aide attempted to defend King’s sincerity on the issue of [opposition to the Vietnam War], Johnson reportedly replied, ‘Goddamn it, if only you could hear what that hypocritical preacher does sexually.’” This is a milder term of abuse for King. Johnson was known for using the racial slur that is unprintable in our respectable publications or printable only with a trigger warning as was done in an MSNBC article.

That MSNBC article acknowledges that Johnson was “a reliable member of the Southern bloc, helping to stonewall civil rights legislation” for two decades, but gives Johnson a pass as a product of his times and

I’d love to see Hollywood make an honest movie about James Armistead Lafayette. Heads would explode nation wide.

Lafayette was a slave, patriot, spy, double agent, freed slave......slave owner. LOL

Wasn’t RFK, Jr.’s father, RFK, Sr., involved with surveilling King?

Johnsons Great Society was created and sold as a Big Government program to help elevate people and to help them realize their potential.

It was, in fact, a program designed solely to destroy the Black family.

It’s been successful, perhaps even beyond President Johnsons dream.

The John and Robert Kennedy both were involved in the King wiretaps.

MLK had two very close associates who were members of the Communist Party, Stanley Levison and Hunter Pitts Odell. That would compare with having radical Islamic associates today.

I think white liberals are always startled to find that deep down, blacks don’t think there’s any such thing as a good white person. Or Latino. Or Asian. Or Jew...

NOI is radical Islam (Sharpton and Jackson both embraced NOI early on in their race baiting careers as did Farakhan. Sharpton and Jackson splintered from Farakhan and left NOI seeing greener pastures in the sanctity of their so-called Christianity.) Has been since the early 20th century. Only one has to look at what they want to achieve to see it as such. The US of A has been dealing with this religion since the beginning of this country. What does it take for people wake up?

“It was, in fact, a program designed solely to destroy the Black family.”

There’s no evidence of that being his motive. He was a lousy President and his worst legislation wouldn’t have passed without a lot of Republican help. You can routinely hear some dimwitted conservatives praising the Republican role in passing LBJ’s agenda because evidently after the passage of time a progressive Republican gets transformed into a ‘conservative’.

Johnson was a liberal, a protege of FDR, and his Great Society was destructive to everyone not just blacks. It encouraged welfare dependence and discouraged working. It’s still doing its damage because it was never unrolled by the GOP when they were in power. Just like they will never unroll Obamacare.

Johnson and his staff weren’t idiots.

Do you really think they didn’t know what they were doing?

That the results blindsided them?

If MLJ was such a saint, why are were his records sealed for 50 years? Why is he being protected?

“It was, in fact, a program designed solely to destroy the Black family.

It’s been successful, perhaps even beyond President Johnsons dream.”

People really believed, at one time, that it could work.

That MSNBC article acknowledges that Johnson was “a reliable member of the Southern bloc, helping to stonewall civil rights legislation” for two decades

My impression is he was more of an opportunist. It wasn't so much that Johnson was fighting civil rights legislation when he was in the Senate. He knew that civil rights legislation wasn't going to pass in the 1950s, and he was okay with that because it kept the Democratic Party from falling apart on sectional lines.

“Johnson and his staff weren’t idiots. Do you really think they didn’t know what they were doing? That the results blindsided them?”

Idiots, no. Arrogant fools, certainly. And LBJ got plenty of help from progressives in the Republican party. It’s not like he was doing this on his own.

Liberals believe that good intentions equal good results. That’s not a mystery, that’s how they’ve always operated. Liberals think that their politic agenda has the power to deliver heaven on Earth. It’s their religion. So they are always blindsided when their policies result in disaster and they always blame someone and something other than themselves.

Johnson’s Great Society included every liberal do-gooder project imaginable. Curing poverty, ending racism, promoting civil rights, welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, Public Broadcasting, the list went on and on. All ideas loaded with good intentions.

The fact that it would end badly and was filled with unintended consequences of the worst sort was obvious to conservatives from the start. But then conservatives tended not to believe in the perfectibility of man. That’s why they weren’t liberals.
