He handed the bank teller a note, which asked for a donation to be made to his church, according to documents filed in court.
Rhode Island police believe that the former professor, who currently lives in a Boston suburb, is responsible for a similar heist at a bank in Providence.
According to the Providence Journal, a middle-aged man robbed a Citizens Bank in November, telling the clerk who handed over $3,000, 'Thank you, this is for the church.'
The Post reports that while waiting to be arraigned for the incident on New Year's Eve, Gibbons told another man who was locked up the inspiration for the robberies.

Crime is art. Art is crime.
Mental Eval followed by jail time..If not it will prove we are definitely SCREWED
The judge should give him the maximum penalty and explain “I’m an artist too”.
or “Art Critic”.
LOL
I say put him in prison and let him make an “art film” with his cell buddy Bubba.
Another MIT prof, I see. Well, all he did was rob a bank. At least he didn’t pull a bazillion-dollar health-care scam on the whole country.
Exactly, film the sentencing for art purposes
Now he will be able to do an ‘Art’ film while he is in prison. Should be a big hit with the Gay crowd.
The pen stroke is mightier than the brush stroke.
“The pen stroke”,
as Obama has demonstrated so well
Between Gruber and this fruit loop, this is not helping MIT’s reputation.
One of Gruber’s best friends apparently....
Don’t forget the Ciolumbia Professor that was arrested for assaulting a cop and attempting to drop barrels of weapons from a bridge. These are the guys that are educating young people at so called “Prestigious Universities”.
is he indicative of other instructors at MIT?
I’m not sure this is robbery or stupidity on the part of the tellers. I did not read anywhere in the article that:
1. He was armed.
2. He threatened the tellers.
3. He demanded money.
4. He forcefully took money.
Is a note a weapon? Especially one that says, “Please make a donation to my church?” (Not sure on the actual content of the note.)
Methinks the tellers have been trained to lay down to easily.
Nowadays who would rob a bank without having a buddy video the whole thing for YouTube?
When you have no checks and balances you can begin to believe you can do anything you want without consequences. I wonder how much “tenure” has shaped academia to what we have today?
