The lone wolf is the new nightmare, dramatized and amplified this week by the hostage-taking attack in Sydney. But there are two kinds of lone wolves the crazy and the evil and the distinction is important.
The real terrorists are rational. Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, had been functioning as an Army doctor for years. Psychotics cannot carry that off. Hasan even had a business card listing his occupation as SoA (Soldier of Allah). He then went out and, shouting Allahu Akbar, shot dead 13 people, 12 of them fellow soldiers. To this day, Hasan speaks coherently and proudly of the massacre. Thats terrorism.
Sydneys Man Haron Monis, on the other hand, was a marginal, alienated Iranian immigrant with a cauldron of psychopathologies. Described by his own former lawyer as unhinged, Monis was increasingly paranoid. Hed been charged as accessory to the murder of his ex-wife and convicted of sending threatening letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers.
His religiosity was both fanatical and confused. A Shiite recently converted to Sunni Islam, his Internet postings showed not just the zeal of the convert but a remarkable ignorance of Islam and Islamism. He even brought the wrong Islamic banner to the attack. He had to ask the authorities to provide him with an Islamic State flag.

Days after the Canadian soldier was shot dead at the military shrine, a hatchet-wielding man, a member of the hallowed "religion of peace," savagely attacked and wounded NYC police officers. Later, kind and compassionate progressive City Officials said they "didnt believe" the axe-killer had any connection to terrorism......
Of course not...only an intolerant racist would think this kindly man with an axe is (horrors) an actual "terrorist." In fact, the peace-loving axe-wielder meant no harm....he was here at the express invitation of the progressive Obama administration. Read on.
DHS SIGNS OFF ON Obama admin's law to let
into the US, immigrants with 'limited' terror contact
The Daily Caller | 2/5/14 / FR Posted by Nachum
The Obama administration has issued new exemptions to a law that bars certain asylum-seekers and refugees who provided limited material support to terrorists who are believed to pose no threat from the U.S.
The Department of Homeland Security and the State Department published the new exemptions Wednesday in the Federal Register to narrow a ban in the Immigration and Nationality Act excluding refugees and asylum seekers who had provided limited material support, no matter how minor, to terrorists.
These exemptions cover five kinds of limited material support that have adversely and unfairly affected refugees and asylum seekers with no tangible connection to terrorism: material support that was insignificant in amount or provided incidentally in the course of everyday social, commercial, family or humanitarian interactions, or under significant pressure, a DHS official explained to The Daily Caller.
Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson and Secretary of State John Kerry signed the exemptions. DHS contends that the law change is commonsense and that immigration procedures will remain the same in other respects. (Excerpt) Read more at dailycaller.com ...
Sorry, Chuck. As far as I’m concerned it’s a distinction without a difference.
L
I'm sure that Dr. Krauthammer, who does have some insight into the human condition, goes on to explain why the distinction is important - maybe it has something to do with anticipating terrorism (Hasan or the Australian/Iranian evil or nuts, I get it) but I'm not going to read the whole thing.
To me there ain't much difference when someone starts shooting, that is unless someone can provide insight into how to anticipate it.
Question their motives after they've been shot dead on the spot.
Kraut would not be a shrink I’d ever consult. The Ft. Hood shooter was crazy and evil and was protected from getting thrown out of the service by the pc brigade.
I thought he was referring to Øbongo.
If I understand Krauthammer correctly, he's saying Hasan was evil, but not insane. What he did may have been "crazy" in common parlance, but he knew what he was doing and what it meant and was capable of acting otherwise.
Maybe the problem is that we don't hear of people getting discharged for being evil, but it's at least theoretically possible to get thrown out for being crazy. In that case, it would have been better to discharge Hasan as insane than keep him around.
Where the crazy-evil distinction is significant is here:
Nonetheless, in the scheme of things, the crazies are limited in what they can carry out. They are too disorganized to do more than localized, small-scale damage. The larger danger is the Maj. Hasan with his mental faculties intact and his purpose unwavering.
Because Hasan was capable of planning and carrying through with his plan he was more dangerous than somebody carried away by an impulse or a mania.
So there is a difference between the crazy and the evil, the proud fanatic and the “cauldron of psychopathologies” according to the doctor. But yet there is still a commonality, and that is Islam. The crazed and the psychopath can both find their place side by side in a death cult that raises the murder of the defenseless to a sacrament.
First and foremost: Take no prisoners; otherwise Hussein 0bama would just call it "workplace violence", let him go, and then put a bounty on his head for recapture.
More blather from a shrink. Psychotics often operate without appearing crazy at all. The teacher who puts all the boys in her class on ritalin is a psychotic. The guy who beats his wife and kids in private but seems so nice at work is one. Psychotics often seem eminently rational while they commit the most heinous acts.
President Obama is a fine example. Though more recently he’s become a lot more irrational as he makes obviously crazy statements like “race relations have improved in the US” as Fergusen burns. Or “The threat of terrorism is over in Afghanistan” while terrorists murder school children.
Liberals are often psychotics. They talk a big game about how much they care while their policies kill and destroy lives in vast numbers. If something is sick and perverted liberals will promote it.
Krauthammer, being a shrink, doesn’t want this phenomena looked at simply because his own profession is loaded with practicing psychotics. Who else would electroshock someone?
No, Hassan was not crazy. He knew exactly what he was doing and knew the consequences of his actions. He was not crazy. Evil, yes. Please do not ever give this terrorist an out like that.
It's shades of the authorities who insist that there is no "knockout game" or "war on whites" because some of the playaz didn't follow all the "rules" of the game.
Yet one person kills an abortionist and ALL of the opponents of abortion are smeared as potential terrorists.
Hassan was standing up and shouting death threats at the infidel LONG before he gunned down those at Fort Hood. His outburts were known and he was shielded from action because his mental illness is Islamic jihad.
With your own gun.
>> I thought he was referring to Øbongo.
Me too!
Oh well, the same issues and remedies could apply to a lone wolf *tyrant*, I suppose.
I’m not giving anyone an out - especially his “superiors” who allowed this monster to continue on base despite his obviously evil/crazy/islamic broadsides.
The circumstances are different in the different cases. So far as I know most of these recent killers didn't travel far and didn't have sophisticated weapons.
With the Internet "lone wolves" can get the know-how and inspiration that they want online. It's a less centralized network than you might have seen in previous decades.
” How to fight the lone wolf “ ?
you go after the families too ......
