Rush Limbaugh: James Bond can't be black like Idris Elba!
MSN ^ | 12/23/14 | Daniel Gates

**SNIP**

After mentioning the Sony emails and telling his listeners who Elba is, Limbaugh said, “Here’s the thing, though… James Bond is a fictional character, obviously. James Bond was invented, created by Ian Fleming… and James Bond is… white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is.”

“But now Sony is suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton rather than a white from Scotland,” continued Limbaugh. “But that’s NOT who James Bond is, and I know it’s racist to probably even point this out… We had 50 years of white Bonds because Bond is white. Bond was never black. Ian Fleming never created a black Brit to play James Bond. The character was always white. He was always Scottish.”

Meh, if Elba can play a black Heimdall, he can probably pull off a black Bond.

Black Scottish.

When’s the last time a James Bond movie looked like anything Ian Fleming wrote anyway?

Agree, but what about Tim Dalton or George Lazenby?

I have not watched any of the Bond movies with these actors, so I can't express an opinion.

I don’t care. It’s a movie made by a huge corporation. If it’s entertaining, it will be financially successful. If it’s not, Sony will lose money.

The Bond films, for the most part, have never been about what Fleming wrote anyway.

THAT was the absurdity you see in the Wild Wild West?

Elba is only 42, Brooks is 66.

Idris Elba should be the CEO of Sony.

That’s one role he can’t play.

Black guy, sneaking into your house at midnight with a sack over his shoulder? Everyone knows the ending to that movie!

He was very good, and OHMSS is still my fav. Though Casino Royale and Skyfall were superb.

But the Craig casting broke the mould.

As a Bond fan (true fan—novels and films) and a Scot/Brit, I have no problem with Idris playing the role. He’s a terrific actor and physically right. I’d rather have a black British actor as Bond than an American or wrong Commonwealth choice (ie too aussie an actor).

My choice for the next would be Tom Hardy. Right build and height, and the best young British actor there is.

Actually the Craig films 2006-today have reset the character back nearer to Fleming’s bond, just as Dalton did in the late 80’s.

To a certain extent they have, but I still prefer Dalton over Craig. Fleming’s Bond was dangerous, certainly, and had an edge, but he was not a bodybuilder by any stretch of the imagination. There is something a little *too* indestructible about Craig that doesn’t sit quite right for me.

The Scottish/Swiss background to Bond was only added after Connery was such a success in the role. James Bond was really partly Ian Fleming, and partly the Ian Fleming he wished to be.

There are several facets to the Bond character and although fashions and styles change (Connery’s 1971 Diamonds Are Forever could easily have been a Roger Moore film) I think each actor brought something to the role, and nailed one particular facet. Moore sometimes gets a rough-ride these days, but he brought out the snobbery and elegance of the original character, better than anyone else.

Also, assuming that Craig makes another film after SPECTRE (possibly another two) then Idris Elba would be a little too old for the role in any case.

Im sorry....watched the first 2 craig films. they were entertaining modern action movies, and better than the previous, but to the point of absurdity. the one scene in a construction sight where bond and villain fought on a skeletal building was more superman than James Bond. not even remotely feasible.

I was glad they were able to do Casino Royale which had only been done as a joke back in the day and I refused to watch that old one. Craig is a good action performer, but he cant hold a candle to Sean Connery a for tough, yet suave Bond.
also I Will never ‘get’ M as a woman...not a job estrogen can handle.

Second Craig film was so-so, watch Skyfall, its excellent.

Yes, Big Tam will always be the greatest.

In real life, a woman was head of MI5 here, maybe American women just aren’t as tough as British women, lol. Thatcher for example.

Fleming described James Bond's looks as "like a young Hoagy Carmichael", so... probably none of them.

They can make it but they can’t make us watch it—or pay for it. Seems they’re naggerizing everything else trying to assuage their white liberal guilt, but all they’re doing is turning our stomachs, and us away from them. Who needs this crap? Not me, I wouldn’t watch it on a free download. Ptui!

I agree with you...I cannot stop Sony from making a Bond film with a black James Bond. However, I don't have to watch it.

Radio host Michael Medved discussed this issue briefly on his show. He did not mention Limbaugh by name. But, he said that conservatives look "bad" by speaking out against the concept of black James Bond...Medved said that he saw nothing wrong with a black James Bond.

I agree with Medved on some issues...But, not on this issue. Medved often points out liberal bias in movies. He often criticizes movies for being politically correct. Isn't casting a black actor for James Bond character being politically correct? I guess Medved does not believe that. But, I do believe that it is being politically correct.
