Islamic center to operate in St. Anthony Village [Obama's DOJ sues city]

A settlement agreement announced Tuesday calls for St. Anthony Village to allow an Islamic group to use a portion of a building the group owns for worship and other religious activities.

The U.S. government reached the settlement with the city over its 2012 rejection of a proposed Islamic center. Since the Islamic center bought the St. Anthony Business Center in 2011, its leaders have wanted to maintain office space for the current tenants and to hold its religious gatherings in the building's basement level.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger announced the results of settlement negotiations agreed upon Dec. 11 at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

The decision still must be ratified by the full city council Dec. 23.

Because the city council's original denial was based on a zoning restriction, council members also have to vote to change the zoning to a planned use development by February 2015.

Obama's Department of Justice sued the city of Saint Anthony at the behest of CAIR to force the city to accept an Islamic worship center in an area zoned for light-industrial use. Previously, the city had denied another Christian organization’s request for using the zoned area that was similar to that of the Islamic center.

The building in question is called the Saint Anthony Business Center (SABC). It is the old Medtronics headquarters in the 1970s.

The owner prior to Abu Huraira was the Jeffrey Wirth. He is currently in federal prison for tax evasion. Abu Huraria picked up the building for a song during the liquidation process.

The tenants were not informed about any of this. I own a business that was located in the basement of that building. I didn't know what was going until suddenly the parking lot was filled with Somali cabs every night.

I moved out because I knew I was going to be evicted at some point, and probably soon. Most of the other basement tenants had already left by the end of 2013.

The lead DOJ attorney for the federal government's lawsuit, Andrew Luger, has personally toured the basement area and said, "It is a large, empty space that is perfect for this community’s Friday evening prayers."

The space is unsuitable for large assemblies and definitely is not safe for children. The largest room is the boiler room (upper right), and there is a large automatic garbage compactor in an unlocked area (center-right) that is easy to crawl into and crush a child. The whole floor is full of plant and equipment and is not suitable for any kind of large public gathering.

The whole Abu Huraia organization is rather weird. After Wirth went to prison I kept sending checks to the landlord, but it was like a black hole. I never heard anything from them ever again. When I sent them my official lease-ending notice via certified mail, I got back a signature receipt and that was it. No acknowledgment that I was ending my lease, nothing. I eventually gave up and just mailed them the keys to the address that Wirth indicated in his transfer letter, an office in Brooklyn Park.

The address was actually his own rental office before he went to jail. Out of curiosity I sent an employee to check the place out. They had simply switched signs on the door, and the employees appeared to be Wirth's. Very odd. Wirth himself had no assets (all seized for tax evasion), so Abu Huraira or some other entity was presumably paying all of his employees somehow.

And after I left, Abu Huraira stiffed me on my lease deposit.

It will be interesting to see if the local police will be pressured not to enforce parking and traffic regulations once the house of worship opens. It has been my experience that Muslims do not think that parking rules apply to them at the hour of prayer and frequently park illegally or double park.
