Sorry, Matt Stroud at AP: Non-Timely Gun Background Checks Don't 'Beat the System'.

In the runup to the Black Friday shopping weekend, the Associated Press's Matt Stroud hysterically claimed that "more gun sales are effectively beating the system" of background checks. Tim Graham at NewsBusters caught how Stroud described the situation as "a 'perfect storm,' like the disastrous ship-sinking movie."

Stroud's report gave readers the clear impression that there are no potential repercussions if a gun buyer who should not have been allowed to purchase a gun based on a completed background check is sold one before such a check is completed when the three-day waiting period expires. Yesterday, the NRA's Institute for Leglislative Action added important information Stroud should have included in his report.

Too bad we all know how this works. This POS article gets a splashy header but if (BIG IF) there were to be a retraction(which there won't) it would be on page 12E in super small print.

I’ve always found that if you frequently purchase firearms, you get cleared instantly over the phone.(or computer)

If I go a few months, I always get the “wait” or “call back”. Apparently there’s a hell raiser out there with a name that’s the same or similar to mine that causes me to get delayed while they sort it out. About half the time, I have to wait anywhere from a few minutes to the next day - in the worst case. If it hadn’t been long since I last cleared, it goes right through. Could be a coincidence, but the dealers I’ve spoken to about it indicate that’s what is going on.

Yeah, when my wife and I have purchased firearms the wait has been anywhere from about 10 min to 2 hours. But the wait is the wait - you don’t walk out of there unless and until it comes back green.

The moonbat reporter fails also to mention that if a denial occurs, the FBI will ask the FFL dealer if the firearm was transferred (legal to do for a delayed transfer after 3 business days). If transfer did occur, the next sound heard is the ATF knocking on the door of the transferee to seize the firearm (and likely any others that may be there).

Most FFL’s won’t transfer on a delayed status. Of course, he also fails to mention a vast number of transfers occur with a CCW permit where it has been annotated on the form and that’s it with no NICS check because it was done with the permit.

I wonder how that plays out in WA now. Does a CCW still get an okay without a bgc? What if both private parties are CCW? I guess they’re still working out all the details. Of course the anti’s are in the “We got that passed now here’s what else we want” mode. Oddly enough the Reno Gazette Journal had an editorial this morning saying that the similar initiative in the system here in NV is a waste of time due to it’s ineffectiveness. HUH? The rgj said that. Here’s the link if you care to read it.

If delayed 72+ hours it’s to be granted.

Some FFL stores won’t release. Most private FFL will.

If delayed often, there’s an application for a “unique identifier” you can do. (I thought that’s why we had SS #’s?)
