One of the uglier chapters in the history of academe is the way many of our top universities, led by Harvard, adopted de facto quotas on Jews after World War I because of concerns their rising numbers of Jewish would ruin their schools.
Today a group called Students for Fair Admissions is suing Harvard, arguing that the folks up in Cambridge are at it again. But this time, they say, the target isnt Jews but Asians, who are losing out from admissions policies based on race.
Students for Fair Admissions is also suing the University of North Carolina now in the midst of another scandal involving academic fraud for the benefit of athletes as well as Harvard. But well concentrate on Harvard here.
The applicant it cites is a first-generation Asian-American who ranked No. 1 in a high-school class of 460, attended a high school ranked in the top 5 percent of US high schools, had perfect 800 scores for his SAT II history and math, was an AP Scholar, National Scholar and the like and captained his varsity tennis team in addition to other volunteer and extracurricular activities that included helping Chinese students learn English. But he was rejected.

I love Asians, as long as they speak English. Jewis people didn’t try to force us to hear them in Hebrew. my child had a Chinese grad student for freshman math and no one could understand the dude.
Liberals..................they can’t be racist......................in their perfectly ordered world........................
We try...................
Must be benefiting from Asian Privilege.
I challenged a Chinese math professor of mine who readily answered questions of students in their native language. He might write an explanation in math on the board, but wouldn’t repeat himself in English.
Had to take it up to the dean, that it was unfair for those who didn’t speak Chinese in Calculus 3, since one person’s question might benefit the whole class, and you couldn’t get an easily understood answer in English.
There’s an old joke here about the young Asian boy who spoke perfect Yiddish to customers in a furniture store in Crown Heights.
Shocked, a customer said to the owner, “How did he learn Yiddish?!”
To which the owner replies “SHHHHH. He thinks I am teaching him English.”
I had a statistics professor from Lebanon at MIT who refused to answer any questions from me and tried to get everyone to write their name (instead of student number) on the exam. He even gave out coded Blue Books (which I switched).
Complaints got me no where, even though the problem was acknowledged.
Got an “4.0” anyway.
That’s pretty funny. Here’s another one...
A Chinese exchange student arrives at a prestigious university for the first time. She goes to the main Administration building to register. The lady at the counter tells her, “You’re in the wrong place. You need Orientation.”
“No”, she says, “I’m already Oriental. I’m here to be oxidized”.
I really can't think of any reason that Harvard would reject this kid, unless he hinted on an essay or in an interview that he was a conservative politically. Then all bets would be off.
The quotas, you would think, only apply to more marginal Asian applicants.
BTW, speaking of the anti-Jewish quotas at Harvard implemented after WWI (as indicated in the New York Post editorial), one of the ringleaders in establishing that policy was none other than famed Harvard alum Franklin D. Roosevelt.
what was the outcome?
I didn't know that!
You learn something new every day!
I guess that means they want the Asian Students to...

Come Back Home
Harvard admits a couple thousand freshman.
There are 35,000 high schools out there including private. Lots of kids are #1. Top 5% as in the case of this individual, almost fills their freshman class. And many of these schools, particularly public, come from affluent areas, which may underrepresent minorities, as may the private schools. Asians and Jews are not minorities, just being a minority isn't enough unless you meet the underperformance criteria. Harvard already admits 20% Asians, overrepresentation, and though I don't think they report Jews officially, it's rumored to be above the Asian number in most Ivy league schools. Thus this doesn't surprise me at all.
Also anecdotally, knowledge of this "problem" often motivates students to outperform. Even beyond Harvard knowing you need, for example, higher LSATs than minorities can be a motivating factor.
Because parents tell kids study hard orrr they kill them LOL!
Trust me that how I remember my childhood friends LOL!
I still like the Music Video of that song

The teacher was informed to speak English in class when answering questions. If the student didn’t understand enough English, answer in Chinese and then explain in English.
Which he usually did by saying “this is what I said to do, now in math” before writing it out on the board.
I ended up barely passing, after showing that I’d copied everything he’d written on the board in class and notes that I explained to the dean were verbatim the English conversations in class, along with two notebooks of Schaum’s study guides worked on my own to learn what he wasn’t teaching. Half his conversations were with Chinese students, and his translations of their answers was mostly “look, this is what I say”, but if you don’t understand the transformations or borders and limits, you don’t get it.
I think he passed me by a few points just to avoid a problem. But I was the only white woman in the class, while some of the other white guys said little or sought tutoring.
The linear algebra and differential equations guy afterward was a Russian but spoke very good English. Got a B in that class, so my challenges in Calculus 3 clearly weren’t due to being bad in math.
You pay for an education and the instructor is unable to speak English. Its an insult and a scam. IOW the university is doing more for this foreigner-grad student-instructor than they are for 20 students in the class who are English speakers. Its a rotten scam. In my world if you cannot communicate in English you go find other work or go back to China and teach math in the language you are compfortable in
