Republicans in Congress are unified in their desire to fight President Obama's action to protect more than 4 million immigrants from deportation and ease rules for up to 1 million more.
They just can't agree on how to do it.
Should they shut down the government? File a lawsuit? Or is there a more measured approach that could showcase Republican leadership, such as passing a legislative alternative?
"We're working with our members and looking at the options that are available to us," House Speaker John A. Boehner said Friday. "But I will say to you that the House will, in fact, act."
Here's a look at their leading options.
1. Do nothing for now.
The heaviest lift for Republican leaders would be to persuade their members to take a deep breath and hold their fire. They could launch committee hearings and investigations into Obama's actions one is set for early next month but otherwise shift to different priorities. That would mean working with Democratic leaders to pass a so-called omnibus appropriations bill by Dec. 11 deadline to fund government until next October, lifting the risk of another shutdown.
Before the president announced his executive action, leaders on both sides supported an omnibus bill, which would let the Republican majorities start fresh in January on their agenda and begin sending legislation to the president.
Incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says that by breaking congressional deadlock and pursuing a proactive, not reactive, agenda, Republicans will secure a better footing to rein in the administration's policies.
Conservative lawmakers and allied outside groups call such an approach dead on arrival.
"Inaction is not an acceptable response," said Michael Needham, chief executive of the conservative group Heritage Action, in a statement urging lawmakers to deny funding for the president's program.

Nullify what, exactly?

I feel safer, and my freedoms are safer when the federal government is shut down.

“D-uhhh, what do we do next?” GOP
This is more than a little unsettling. We stood up for these guys. I voted straight Republican ticket and got a lot of other people to do the same.
It’s something like being your friend’s Best Man (I’ve done it twice) and getting a phone call from the groom asking if you can come over the hotel and ... lift him on-and-off his bride.
What do we have to do with these reluctant warriors? Cinch up their nuts with duct tape so these flower-sniffing bulls will vacate the chute and buck? Cattle prods?
What would that look like?
If something is not done immediately to stop Obama from abusing his power to sign executive orders, Obama will feel free to sign more executive orders whenever he feels like it: Tomorrow, 6 months from now, Obama will sign new executive orders legalizing another 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 illegals until there won't be anybody left in Mexico and Central America, because they will all be here in the United States because of the "kindness" and pen of President Obama.
Is there any judge or any lawmaker out there who can stop this madman Obama from destroying the United States as we know it? God help us.
Change the constitution is about the only thing you can do.
And besides, there was no immigration EO.

RE: Defund ICE and the White House
So, what to make of all pending legal visa applications of all types? Who’s going to process them?
RE: Impeach
That can be done with a simple Congressional majority.
But you’ll need 67 in the Senate to convict and remove.
The GOP will only have 54 come 2015 ( assuming Mary Landrieu loses in Dec. 6).
It will be fun to watch, but ultimately useless.
And the federal government might leave my rights alone while they fiddled with that.

Do visa apps mean anything any more? It is only a small step now to simply remove all hurdles to entry and Immigration and something like that will probably be quietly implemented. Passports will be checked for record keeping purposes and no more. Perhaps voter registration forms will be issued to all new arrivals.
Do nothing - let him own it fully. The pain points will be evident within months.
After their supposed suppression of the TeaParty they intended to make nice w/ obaba and now they've been cuckolded.
Truth to tell, this is the immigration bill their money boys wanted all along (see CofC) and so they'll pretend to be pissed but their hearts aren't in it.
This is a perfect opportunity for the TeaParty to highlight the supine nature of the Rovian "leaders".
Its now clear that obaba has no respect for the Rovians and so how can they possibly deal w/ him. We should sit back and enjoy their walk of shame up to the podium to say um, well, um we're going to fund the government, but um, we're really mad.
They're dead now, obaba bitch slapped boenher and McConnell, they have no standing. They have no face.
With no seemingly discussion of impeachment, the only way to stop this creature is by not funding his pets.
It Is Time For The Congress To Re-establish its constitutional authority
While the talkies, talk radio show hosts, need to remind US of this.. Members of the House and Senate also seem to forget. While those selected to head various federal departments of government are recomended by the incomming POTUS (president of the United States).
Such candidates are constitutionaly required to be approved by the Senate in a procedure known as advise and consent.. Those appointed then are also sworn to uphold, protect, serve, and support the constitution. Not the executive branch. .
These appointees can and should refuse any executive order.Or allow the executive branch create a political appointee (Czars) who over rides their congressional authority. Particularly. If and when that executive order is designed to ignore existing congressional legislation which defines a departments jurisdiction or specific purpose protecting the interests of the country . Which places the country in danger, or minimizes the value of citizenship, or places its citizens in clear and eminent danger.
Therefore they and their respective departments must be held answerable to both houses of congress which funds these operations. And, should be held in contempt, censure, and impeachment and the funds witheld if refused to comply.
Geeeeee ..?? When are these idiots going to check the Senate and find out they have a first class lawyer who is a scholar in the Constitution ..???????
They’re just so stubborn they won’t get advice from Senator Cruz .. because he supports the Tea Party.
This is like high school stuff .. you can’t speak to that guy over there because he belongs to some other group.
I’m at the point of turning off my TV. I’m ready to give up .. the crooks appear to be running the game, and nobody seems willing or able to stop them.
An LA Slime article? Pay no attention to the RATS behind the curtain—ever.
1. Iraq and Syria refugees, in, say Turkey: How limited is Obama's power in signing any immigrant or refugee executive order?
2. For instance, does Obama technically have the legal power to sign an executive order tomorrow---just a few days after he signed his present illegal immigration executive order---where he grants temporary amnesty to 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 Iraqi and Syrian refugees, and nobody can do anything about it?
3. Africa refugees: Tomorrow, can Obama legally grant immediate amnesty to 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 Ebola refugees from Africa, and, again, nobody can do anything about it?
4. In summary, does Obama and his clever lawyers have us by the throat when it comes to Obama's claim that he has unlimited legal power to sign executive orders wherever and whenever he pleases, and nobody can stop him, not Congress, not the courts?
5. Pardon for 5,000,000 illegals: Just before Obama leaves office in two years, can Obama legally pardon 5,000,000 illegals with an executive order?
6. Has the use of unlimited executive order power intoxicated Obama so much that he has become completely mad? God help us.
