Republicans want to oppose Obama on immigration, but how?
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/22/2014 | y MICHAEL A. MEMOLI, LISA MASCARO

Republicans in Congress are unified in their desire to fight President Obama's action to protect more than 4 million immigrants from deportation and ease rules for up to 1 million more.

They just can't agree on how to do it.

Should they shut down the government? File a lawsuit? Or is there a more measured approach that could showcase Republican leadership, such as passing a legislative alternative?

"We're working with our members and looking at the options that are available to us," House Speaker John A. Boehner said Friday. "But I will say to you that the House will, in fact, act."

Here's a look at their leading options.

1. Do nothing — for now.

The heaviest lift for Republican leaders would be to persuade their members to take a deep breath and hold their fire. They could launch committee hearings and investigations into Obama's actions — one is set for early next month — but otherwise shift to different priorities. That would mean working with Democratic leaders to pass a so-called omnibus appropriations bill by Dec. 11 deadline to fund government until next October, lifting the risk of another shutdown.

Before the president announced his executive action, leaders on both sides supported an omnibus bill, which would let the Republican majorities start fresh in January on their agenda and begin sending legislation to the president.

Incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says that by breaking congressional deadlock and pursuing a proactive, not reactive, agenda, Republicans will secure a better footing to rein in the administration's policies.

Conservative lawmakers and allied outside groups call such an approach dead on arrival.

"Inaction is not an acceptable response," said Michael Needham, chief executive of the conservative group Heritage Action, in a statement urging lawmakers to deny funding for the president's program.

As we have seen with the HHS/ACA, Government action takes 3 years to fail and billions of dollars..........

Congress holds the purse strings, and in January the GOP will own the Senate under Harry Reid’s 51 vote rule.

Check mate. Plus congress can exercise the Ultimate threat...Firing any Government workder that enforces an illegal Executive order, under punishment of law.

They just throw a CR funding until Oct 2015 in there. I don't think that's a good idea for the lame-duck democrat senate to determine funding until October of next year.

Republicans aren’t serious about pushing back on Obama’s latest power grab.

They knew this was coming and could (should) have had various strategies and responses mapped out, lawyers and paperwork sitting on go just waiting for Obama to reveal the final details.

What did he do that lawyers could react to?

A speech?

I would say do all of the above in the article except “do nothing”. File the lawsuits to fight it, defund it in the mean time - and states should use his “we don’t have to enforce laws we don’t like” to continue deportations in their states and refusing services to those who haven’t paid for it.

Defund ICE and the White House. We don’t need ICE any more with our border manned by shackled and muffled border agents. They are a waste of money.

he has made the EO. He just didn’t call it that. He simply is telling his minions to do these things, calling them up and telling them to give the illegals drivers licenses, green cards, SS nrs., voter registration cards, etc.

That doesn't work without an EO. He hasn't promulgated an EO.

He made a speech.

He signed a memo that said that the executive branch has to comply with existing law.

He is no closer to amnesty than he was a month ago.

He certainly has got a lot of people stirred up and waving their arms though.

Enough that the LA times could just throw a CR extending funding for the government through October 2015 in their article and freepers didn't notice.

Nullify the thing. The House alone has the power to do it as it impinges on their Constitutional prerogatives and power. There’s plenty of precedent for it. That they won’t do it speaks volumes about them, none of it good.

“Should they shut down the government?”

Only the leftists get to control the terms of the debate, it seems. As long as we let them get away with such stupidity as this, we play right into their hands.

The exercise of the Constitutional authority granted the People’s House will only result in shutting down the government if the executive branch so chooses, by Zero’s tinkering response.

For the record...it’s a great idea. Shut it down.

I'm ok with waiting. He still doesn't have amnesty.

And with the backlash, he may not create an EO.

I think he wants to stampede the House into passing a bill that he likes, just so SOMETHING gets done.
