Can Mary Landrieu get to 60 senate votes on Keystone pipeline?
The Hill ^ | 11/18/2014 | Laura Barron-Lopez

Embattled Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and other supporters of building the Keystone XL pipeline appear to be one vote short of the 60 they need to win a key vote on the project on Tuesday.

Landrieu has 59 votes backing legislation to approve the project, and Sens. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) and Angus King (I-Maine) appear to be her top targets to get to 60.

The effort is crucial to Landrieu because of her runoff election in December against Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who also backs the pipeline. Landrieu is seen as a decided underdog in the race, and Senate Democrats have scheduled Tuesday’s vote to try to give her a boost. If she fails, it could be a death knell for her reelection hopes.

Supporters of Keystone had been targeting Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), but a spokesman for the senator told The Hill on Monday that he would vote no.

Both sides are furiously working the phones in advance of Tuesday evening’s vote.

Proponents are “burning up the phone lines and e-mails trying to find that vote to support the procedural move,” Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Sunday.

Green groups are pushing right back, rallying outside of Landrieu's Washington, D.C. home on Monday morning. A small group of activists led by 350.org draped an inflatable pipeline across Landrieu's front yard.

I’ve said it before, but if she really wanted to save her seat, she would push for the repeal of ACA.

If she had done this six months ago....she would have swung almost fifty percent of the vote. Funny, how she’d suddenly find courage now but it’s without any value.

I hope she gets the 60 and then gets annihilated in her runoff.

She’s been there for 18 years so she should be able to get something done.

Seems she would have thought of this sooner. She got on the obamaboat, she can sink with it.

Angus King will vote to move the bill to the floor, but Jay Rockefeller won’t. The vote to bring the bill to the floor of the Senate will fail by one vote. It will show the voters in Louisiana that she is lacks clout.

RE: If she even got the votes, cant eboma just stop it somehow?

He can veto it.

And if he does, it’s going to be a pain to override his veto.

We’ll need at least 290 in the lower house and 67 in the upper house to override it.

The numbers just aren’t there....

This is chess, they can always vote for Keystone once Mary is gone.

The question is not can Landrieu get to 60, it is can Cassidy get to 67?

Well, one thing is for sure.

The days of Lapdog Harry preventing votes on bills that obama doesn't like have come to a close.

Lapdog Harry has shielded from having to use the veto to appease his base.

Now, the very few Americans who don't see him as a flaming liberal, willing to sacrifice what's good for the country in the name of politics... well, those days are over.

“I’ve said it before, but if she really wanted to save her seat, she would push for the repeal of ACA.”

it’s easy to push for anything. If she could get it repealed before Dec 1, then maybe she deserves another chance. Nothing short of that though.

Here’s the fix....59 will be the number and Obama won’t have to deal with it. Agree with you, she’ll still be annihilated in the runoff.

They know they can always tie it up in the courts, or use the regulators to tie it up if it gets passed.

Obama has announced twice he was opening up the coast to drilling, and both times the regulators stopped it. Its a game he plays.

Sure he can VETO it, and congress would need 290 votes in the House and 67 votes in the Senate to override the bastard. Even after the GOP takes over, the Senate might be a problem, but "smart" politicians (and I'm not saying the GOP is smart) would take note and make those who vote against it pay in the next election.

This is all Astroturfed Kabuki Theater to make it look like Landrieu is actually doing something for her State.

Agreed, but even the symbolism of proposing a repeal would show that she is responding to the electorate, and is not just towing the party line.

And it would be a desperate act, but she's going down anyhow.
