Object found off Papua New Guinea may solve mystery of Australia’s first submarine AE1 sunk... 1914

One of Australia’s leading submarine experts believes that the nation’s greatest wartime mystery — the loss of submarine AE1 and 34 crew in 1914 — could soon be solved.

Former submariner and retired Rear Admiral Peter Briggs said an “object” found on the ocean floor near Rabaul in Papua New Guinea was possibly the lost submarine HMAS AE1.

Admiral Briggs was closely involved in the 1998 campaign to locate and preserve her sister boat the AE2 lost in the Dardanelles in April 1915.

In September this year the Navy Mine Hunter HMAS Yarra conducted a detailed search of waters to the east of Mioko Harbour, Rabaul where the AE1 sank on September 14, 1914.

On its final day in the area the Yarra’s powerful sonar detected a long object on the bottom, but unfortunately her remote underwater vehicle broke down before it could locate and film it.

Admiral Briggs said the Yarra had numerous contacts during her search operation and her Commanding Officer was confident that the object known as ‘Y1’ was not a rocky outcrop.

It is on the sandy seabed sitting upright in 170 metres of water, is more than 50 metres long (the AE1 was 55 metres) and is shaped like a submarine.

There are no known shipwrecks in the area where the sounding was made.

“The object is likely something man-made due to its sonar signature. It is also located well away from Rabaul Harbour and its WW2 wrecks,” Admiral Briggs said.

Too bad the “Further details on the search for AE1 can be found at www.ae1.org” link from the source is non-functional.
