Opinion - Why the House GOP should threaten another government shutdown
Los Angeles Times ^ | November 14, 2014 | By JON HEALEY

Decisions, decisions.

Congressional Republicans are torn over how to respond to President Obama's executive order allowing more of the people who've settled in the United States illegally to apply for temporary visas and work permits. Although they all see this as an abuse of power, some Republicans want to threaten another government shutdown to try to block Obama, while others want to try to roll back the initiative bit by bit.

The choice facing Republicans boils down to this: Do they repeat the hardball tactics they used last fall in a vain attempt to defund Obamacare or do they pick some battles they might, you know, win? And, paradoxically, the lesson for the GOP from the last time around may be that it's worth playing the shutdown card again, even if the odds of Obama conceding aren't in their favor.

The electorate has a short memory. As much as the public soured on Republicans after the "defund Obamacare" fiasco, the ill will seemed to have evaporated by election day. Of course, having a disastrous rollout of the Obamacare exchange shifted the public's focus and made Congress seem competent by comparison.

The GOP can't rely on that happening every year. Or can it?

There is either firm opposition to Obama's tyranny or it's game over for America as we know it. STOP OBAMA. Shut this [blanker] down.

Just the opposite. The "public" response was all rigged media hype planned to blame Republicans for Obama's actions. What the public remembers is:

Not being able to go to national parks and monuments, even over Columbus Day Weekend, even though it probably cost more money to keep them closed.

Veterans being removed from their own monuments

Some very skillful moments in Ted Cruz's magnificent 21 hours.

How bad things are with ObamaCare and just about everything else Obama has touched.

I would argue that the shutdown is a factor in the Republican landslide. The conclusion to be learned should be "do it again" if that's what it takes to stop the administration's destruction of the US.

The ill will was only experienced by the media and the Democrats (apologies for repeating myself), I would say the Republicans (led by Ted Cruz) were rewarded on election day for standing up to big government and Obamacare!

It is NOT the Republicans who will shut down the government, it will be Obama trying to force his will on the people’s elected representatives. If it happens, notice how Republican leaders will neglect to point this out. They will assume a protective fetal position, rather than come out fighting like lions. Republicans have a habit of allowing the democrats to hem them in with lying democrat spin. They never step outside the democrat box, never tell the democrats to go to hell.

Absolutely correct! This time whenever GOP lawmakers are confronted by the MSM they must correct the false premises that the reporters will undoubtedly cast their way. Go on the offensive! Time to grow a pair.

Can anyone name one Representative or Senator who was NOT elected because of the previous shutdown? I think the Republicans received votes because they finally had the courage to stand up to Obama and they should do it again.

Read the whole article, not very convincing.

It says “Maybe a shutdown wont be so bad because maybe voters will forget it again just like the one a year ago”

???

This is how perverted and dishonest the political dialogue has become. If the House produces a budget CR that Obama doesn’t want, then the House has shut the government down.

No! The House and Senate (or Obama) has simply not agreed upon a budget CR. If Obama refuses to even negotiate (as he did), then Obama has shut down the government. And if a CR contains only cuts in the DHS, then it’s even more on Obama to negotitate.

But the shills in the MSM now report anything that doesn’t give Obama exactly what he wants as the Republicans shutting down the government.

From my observations of Obola’s mental deterioration, I would say do everything possible to antagonize and infuriate him.
He will lash out in the most hideous and petty ways imaginable.
Very soon the Dems in both the House and Senate will have to abandon him (after all they still have elections to face) and we may end up with enough votes to override his vetoes.
The crazier he acts, the more discomfort for the rats.
He will take the whole donkey party down if they don’t watch out.

I think Reid has come to realize that the President has no grasp of the party or the simple mechanics of leadership. So, I think Reid version 3.0 will kick in shortly...picking out battles to leave the President and the White House out of the situation....thus forcing him to cooperate. The damage done here....is significant.
