In a change of direction, University of Illinois officials paved the way Thursday for convicted felon James Kilgore to again teach on campus, the latest controversial faculty decision at the state school.
Kilgore's contract was not renewed after his criminal past was the subject of a newspaper story and board members expressed concern about his employment. But on Thursday, U. of I. board members, including Chairman Christopher Kennedy, who once referred to Kilgore as a "domestic terrorist," decided to allow university officials to rehire Kilgore if they choose.
"We are going to let the (academic) units do what they want to," Urbana-Champaign Chancellor Phyllis Wise said, referring to a committee report released recently that suggested he be allowed to teach. "We are going to go ahead and follow the recommendations of the report."

This week, the Board of Trustees at the University of Illinois will consider hiring convicted murderer and 1970s-era Symbionese Liberation Army terrorist James Kilgore for the second time.
Prior to this academic year, Kilgore spent four years as an adjunct professor of global studies and urban planning at the University of Illinois systems semi-prestigious flagship campus at UrbanaChampaign.
Before Kilgore scored his taxpayer-funded faculty position, he was imprisoned for six years because he had participated in a 1975 bank robbery during which bank customer Myrna Opsahl was murdered.
Opsahl, who bled to death on the floor of the bank, was a 42-year-old mother of four.
Kilgore and his Symbionese Liberation Army comrades robbed the bank and another one to finance guerrilla warfare in support of a communist revolution. They also famously kidnapped newspaper heiress Patty Hearst.
Is there any chance of hurting their funding if they employ this radical?

Guilty.
But of course.
None. None at all.
Conservatives really need to wake up to (and stridently begin opposing) the leftist takeover of American education.
For real.
Someone needs to make a point, of calling it what it is: A gigantic works program, dominated by the left, and enshrined with all sort of protections.
A works program, to indoctrinate America’s youth.
It is far too important to leave in liberals control.
American conservatives, stand up for education.
And what do these ‘teachers’ teach, i wonder?
It’s Illinois for goodness sake, what did you expect?
The U of I had dedicated Marxists on their faculty as far back as the 1950’s when I was there. It is what it is. Illinois, particularly Chicago has been ground zero for the Marxist movement in the USA for well over 100 years.
