Longtime Illinois Congressman Phillip Crane, a northwest suburban Republican who championed conservative principles and once ran for president, died Saturday in Maryland, according to family..
Crane, who suffered from congestive heart failure and lung cancer, died of respiratory failure in a daughter's home in Jefferson, Md., according to another daughter, Catherine Hott, of Berryville, Va.

Yep, Reagan’s biggest mistake was Bush for his VP instead of Crane.

Phil Crane and Jesse Helms were also supposed to be on KAL 007, the flight on which Larry McDonald was murdered.
Phil Crane once asked Larry McDonald why he was a Democrat. “In my district, you have to be,” he said. Maybe not today, Congressman.

His district is not far from the Chicago Ayers/Alinsky epicenter.
Solid conservative, sent him $1,000 for his primary against Reagan, wish he would have won.

I voted for him three times. Once in three different election years (sadly, in IL, you have to make that clear). Sorry he’s gone. RIP.

I considered Phil Crane my surrogate Congressman until he was defeated, 10 years ago, I was literally sick to my stomach when that disgusting little wench Bean convinced suburban dead heads to vote for her marxist *ss. And even more revolting creature sits in that (now gerrymandered) seat today, Tammy Duckface, the fake war hero.
2nd best guy to run for President in 1980. A better Congressman drunk than most sober.
His brother Dan was also a Congressman, defeated in 1984 after a sex scandal with a page girl (17). Queer rat Gerry Studds of MA did the same with a page boy, he was reelected, of course.
Michael Novak was scheduled to be on KAL 007. His wife phoned him in Anchorage (I think it was). She had found a cheaper flight for him, so he switched.

The book tells, among other things, of an organization known as the Intercollegiate Society of Socialists, locating its meetings at Peck’s Restaurant in Boston on Sunday afternoons. The president was novelist Jack London (Call of the Wild, White Fang, etc.) and the membership included FDR and numerous future SCOTUS justices, US Senators and others, mostly from Harvard. I won’t try to record here any other recollections since I have not read the book in 40 years or thereabouts. It is, however, well worth acquiring, reading and understanding. It may have been available only in paperback.

Since his drinking problem put his seat at risk, I agree he should have retired.
But if not for that I see no reason why he should have. It’s never “time for a change” when the guy is doing a great job.
It was very curious when the GOP got the majority in 1995, Gingrich deliberately passed on giving Phil Crane a chairmanship on Ways & Means, where he was senior to Bill Archer (who got it instead). Barone described him as being close to a burn-out case by the early ‘90s and needlessly putting the seat at risk by coasting (as he did in 1992).
Crane had a difficult time in the ‘94 primary, saved only because of a divided opposition (he won with only 40%). The second place finisher was none other than Pete Fitzgerald, who got 33%. Had there been a runoff, it’s unlikely Crane would’ve made it to the 1995 Congress (add to that, a Congressman Fitzgerald would’ve probably still gone for the Senate in 1998, albeit with 2 terms of seasoning under his belt). A fresh Republican would’ve succeeded a “Congressman” Fitzgerald in 1999 and Melissa Bean would’ve just been another failed Dem challenger in a long line in 2004. I’d leave it to you guys to figure out who would’ve been that person 15 years ago (of course, it wouldn’t have been Joe Walsh !).
BTW, did anyone notice Lane Evans died 3 days before Crane (the day after the election) ?
