He was a big conservative hopeful for a few years. Was on the cover of National Review at least once.
I met him once in 1975 when he visited Fort Sheridan IL.
Up & coming conservative star in the 1970’s when conservative wasn’t cool.
RIP Phil Crane.
RIP, sir.
FReegards!
I met him once. Nice man and a solid conservative. RIP Mr. Crane.
I was in high school in 1980. I remember, vaguely, some sort of civics debate we had with the dialog focusing on Carter vs. Reagan and I “wrote in” Crane.
RIP
Crane would have made a much better VP than GHWB.
I don’t remember Rep. Crane, but he sounded like a good guy.
Rest in peace, Congressman.
He was Mr. Conservative and it seems there was always a 100 beside his name in the conservative ratings. He was very handsome and very intellectual. He authored a great book called THE SUM OF GOOD GOVERNMENT.
I met him on a couple of occasions. He was very unpretentious and very nice to an awkward young (back then I was young) conservative. His brother Dan was also a great conservative congressman.
The world seems like a smaller place now that Phil Crane is gone.
Hard to imagine a district that elects Rumsfeld and Crane turns democrat.
RIP.
The district was gerrymandered. I still remember Nancy Pelosi gloating along with Segal on “ALL THINGS CONSIDERED” on PBS radio about Crane losing.
Crane had a great run and in the late ‘70s all conservative doners got tons of fundraising mail signed by Crane as well as mail via Steve Symms. By the time Reagan was sworn in as president the best known popular hardcore conservatives in the House or Senate were Phil Crane, John Ashbrook, Jesse Helms, and Steve Symms.
Thanks, for the history lesson.
Also met him in 1984 was impressed. Rep. Crane lost a few steps which resulted in his defeat by Melissa Bean. That does not dilute the fact had the fortitude to stand tall in a time in the 70s in the dark days. He helped my FIL with an annexation issue and followed up. He did have to but he did.
Rep Crane: May you be in Heaven a half hour before the devil knows you are dead...
...and Congressman Larry McDonald even though Larry was a Democrat he had the most conservative voting record in the House. Crane and McDonald were both intellectual strict-constructionists and both were as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar.
Shortly after Reagan’s coronation the conservative movement lost both Congressman John Ashbrook (mysterious stomach bleeding) and Congressman Larry McDonald (Korean Airlines Flight 007 shootdown).
“...He helped my FIL with an annexation issue and followed up. He did have to but he did....”
Yes, he was a regular fella and he had a great sense of humor too.
RIP. Sadly, he stayed longer than he should have and was battling the bottle, which didn’t help in his loss to Bean.
