The voters in the primaries didn't think so. There was so much untrue things pasted to Romney, and much by Republicans that didn't give a damn what the voters selected, he didn't have a chance. So all hail your King, King Obama.
Mitt Romney was winning 25% in the early states and even after many other candidates dropped out he wasn’t winning much more until it became a fait accompli.
He was never a very popular candidate in the early primaries, he did get 50% in Nevada, the sin city state.
He won 38% of votes on Super Tuesday.
Even when it was already a fait accompli in April he won only 53% of the primary vote. By then Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul were the only ones left on some of the ballots. He somehow still managed not to get a majority in Maryland and Wisconsin.
He did get 70% of the GOPE vote in DC, of course.
