A heart (uh food?) Warming 3-D Printer Story - my title

My great grandmothers stove, which my parents inherited, has been missing two of the gas knobs for years. Nobody sells similar replacements, so my parents had been using generic knobs instead.
That was no good! I took a ton of measurements and booted up Blender, and got a model of them within a few hours. Ordered two from Shapeways, and they got here today.
Nearly indistinguishable from the original! The new one is on the left. This was before we painted them. It took a bit of drilling to fit them on- turns out trying to print EXACTLY the hole size was a dumb idea, since plastic can warp a little and 3D printing isnt quite as precise as to the thousandth of an inch- but now they work fine.
With paint. Looking good!
The whole thing took $20, a few hours of work, and a few weeks of waiting. My parents are so excited to have the stove complete again, which really means a lot to me.

Good advice on hole sizes, draw them a few thousandths oversize.

Very helpful. I didn’t know a site like Shapeways existed. I have some ideas I’d like to make real.

What a great way to make replacement parts for antiques at a reasonable price.
Having to file or drill a hole out is less of a bother than finding that it is too big. Going exact or even a little undersize sounds like the best precaution against having to reorder the part.

What a great old stove. I love those.
I had a replica wood stove that was computer controlled and powered by butane. No one guessed that it was anything but a very old wood stove. Very cool.

I use Blender a lot, everything from video editing to CAD. Open Source.
Heavy learning curve though.

Spending $20 on a reasonably good micrometer (not the professional ones, just a good one) so they can manufacture it to the precise diameter can eliminate the need to do any drilling or filing.
