Oh My: Study Reveals Significant Number of Non-Citizens Vote in US Elections

More than 14 percent of non-citizens in both the 2008 and 2010 samples indicated that they were registered to vote.

Because non-citizens tended to favor Democrats (Obama won more than 80 percent of the votes of non-citizens in the 2008 CCES sample), we find that this participation was large enough to plausibly account for Democratic victories in a few close elections. Non-citizen votes could have given Senate Democrats the pivotal 60th vote needed to overcome filibusters in order to pass health-care reform and other Obama administration priorities in the 111th Congress. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) won election in 2008 with a victory margin of 312 votes. Votes cast by just 0.65 percent of Minnesota non-citizens could account for this margin. It is also possible that non-citizen votes were responsible for Obama’s 2008 victory in North Carolina. Obama won the state by 14,177 votes, so a turnout by 5.1 percent of North Carolina’s adult non-citizens would have provided this victory margin.

That's…a really big deal. Democrats needed every last Senate seat they won in 2008 in order to overcome a GOP filibuster on Obamacare. Without Franken's seat (or Mark Begich's ill-gotten seat), the bill would never have passed -- as written, or at all. Previous studies presented serious evidence that Franken's margin in Minnesota was furnished by felons illegally voting; this new data suggests that ineligible non-citizens could have put him over the top. Pick your poison. Both bodies of evidence, by the way, showed that non-citizens and convicted felons overwhelmingly support Democrats.

I knew an illegal alien who was proud of the fact that he voted as ‘decisions in the US affect the world.’ He only trusted al jazeera for his news.

I’ve been registered to vote for so long I have no idea what proof of citizenship I ever provided. Anybody have any recent anecdotal input about that? What do people have to show in various states? Anything more than a driver’s license?

I guess the Dems are right. I WOULD be a hardship to get a copy of your birth certificate for a voter ID, if you had to go back to Mexico City to get it.

I early voted yesterday in Tennessee, and was delighted to show my photo ID/driver’s license, and the poll worker carefully checked my signature against the one on my driver’s license. Proud of my adopted state!

if you are an adult Mexican national then you already have a very secure voter id and shouldn’t need a birth certificate for identity purposes.

I also had to show my state ID, used me TN Hand Gun Permit. I was also delighted to show my photo ID/driver’s license, and the poll worker carefully checked my signature against the one on my Hand Gun Permit.

I am very proud of Tennessee and our ID requirement to vote. I wish this was the law of the land in all of our states.

When can we expect the GOP to actually take action against the FEC for failure to protect the sanctity of the vote? I will believe that they aren’t part of the problem when Ted Cruz is President of the Senate. Both are about equally likely.

When I moved to Indiana, I registered when I got my driver’s license and plates. To get the licenses, I had to provide various forms of ID: photo ID (my Illinois license), plus my birth certificate and proof of residence (recent utility bill). I brought my passport for good measure. I didn’t think about registering to vote when I went in there, and the guy there only offered it when all the other business was finished. I felt good that they had positively ID’ed me for the licenses, and if they have the same document requirements when people just register to vote, then they have a pretty good system on the front end. I have not voted here yet, so I don’t know if they require ID at the polling place.

Glad they wanted a BC for a DL, even though you already had a DL from out of state. I don’t think that’s always the case. Your IN DL is effective proof of citizenship.
