White House Presses States to Reverse Ebola Quarantine
New York Times ^ | October 26, 2014 | MARC SANTORA and MICHAEL D. SHEAR

The Obama administration has been pushing the governors of New York and New Jersey to reverse their decision ordering all medical workers returning from West Africa who had contact with Ebola patients to be quarantined, an administration official said.

But on Sunday both governors, Andrew M. Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey, stood by their decision, saying that the federal guidelines did not go far enough.

At the same time, the first person to be forced into isolation under the new protocols, Kaci Hickox, a nurse returning from Sierra Leone, planned to mount a legal challenge to the quarantine order. Despite having no symptoms, she has been kept under quarantine at a hospital in New Jersey, where she has been confined to a tent equipped with a portable toilet and no shower. On Sunday, she spoke to CNN about the way she has been treated, describing it as “inhumane.”

A nurse who had worked with Ebola patients in West Africa was placed under quarantine at University Hospital shortly after she landed at Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday.

The rapidly escalating events played out both privately, in intense negotiations and phone calls between federal and state officials, as well as publicly in the nurse’s pointed criticism of the New Jersey governor.

But in that time, two more states – Illinois and Florida – announced that they were instituting similar policies.

Federal officials made it clear that they do not agree with the governors about the need or effectiveness of a total quarantine for health care workers, though they were careful not to directly criticize the governors themselves.

I think the general public will support Cuomo and Christie regarding the quarantine.

Cuomo is up for reelection. He will not change his mind unless his poll numbers drop. I doubt they will over this.

what the hell is it with the obamites and recklessness when it comes to Ebola? I don’t get it. I usually understand their point, even though I disagree with it. But I don’t get this one.

One of their basic principles of governing is "Never let a crisis go to waste."

An obvious corollary of this principle is "never try to fix a crisis until you've gotten everything you want out of it."

Perry Cumo is also running for President, so he’s not about to get outflanked on the right by Christie...and it’s not too hard to keep Christie on your left.

Also, I SPECIFICALLY REMEMBER the president saying it was up to the states to deal with the potential spread of Ebola. Well, 4 states are dealing with it. I guess what he meant that it is up to the states to following his idiotic policies and take the blame when they fail...

If you accept the truth that Obama intends and is working to destroy the country, punish those whom he hates, render us to the lowest of nations - everything he does, everything he says, every duty he ignores - makes perfect sense.

It only makes no sense if you ascribe to him and his regime, the grace that they are simply incompetent and naive and they have the best of intentions.

Helping a level 4 contagion spread by refusing quarantine would fit perfectly with those in his regime who think the planet is overpopulated with useless eaters.

The nutty nurse is taking selfies in quarantine and posting them. Clearly she’s a narcissist but her environment looks clean and comfortable to me.

Yeah, okay. But what are they doing with this crisis? I don’t see a pet cause being assisted, or a chosen group getting a secret benefit, or a sacred liberal cow being fed.

just don’t get it. it’s as though they just want to look utterly incompetent.

making it less easy to get into this country from the place with the raging, deadly, contagious epidemic is a no brainier. putting medical personnel returning from the location of a raging epidemic into quarantine is an even bigger no brainier — especially after one of those returning people came back infected.

Powerline said it best: “this guy is hardwired to do the wrong thing.”

They used to call that evil.

No question. The Obamanoids want to kill Americans. This will soon be a live or death struggle. Ebola is the symptom, 0bama is the disease.

I think the WH push-back is a sham to help the Dems (including Christie) look strong and separated from Obama’s leadership.

I got relatives in New York and subway riders are freaking out about the Doc who rode the subway.

In case you never have been on New York City subways, the people are packed face to face when the doors close there is little moving air. Perfect for spreading Ebola.

Let Obama go take care of people in hospitals, he isn’t stoping Ebola like dozens of other countries with travel bans from west Africa air traffic do.
