A very thoughtful, honest look at the Ebola situation followed by some interesting comments.

Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...

He's vastly over-qualified for that job.

For those who hate over excerpted articles and don't mind spoilers, the thing the author fears most is a deadly, highly contagious flu like the Spanish Flu from 1918.

Thanks, a poster who respected his audience would have included that in the except, or at least post #1,

That would probably spread a lot worse than Ebola would.

I do respect this audience, however I admit I did fail to realize the difficulty some would have with reading the article instead of having excerpted parts I found important spoon fed to them.
As an example, I found the more interesting point not the concern for the flu. I thought the most important point was that he wasn’t sure they would show up for the party.

I loathe progressives, and I am their pandemic! :-)

You might have found that more interesting, but ask yourself, is there anything in the title that would suggest readers would click to see ‘that more interesting thing’?
Or would they be clicking to see what the doctor found more scary?

“But a real bad flu?
There is no way you can prepare for it. The goal should be to protect your hospital from it.”
A very interesting perspective not yet considered, from what I have read.

For those who hate over excerpted articles and don't mind spoilers, the thing the author fears most is a deadly, highly contagious flu like the Spanish Flu from 1918. Thanks for the summary, I didn't want to go to the link.
Influenza is quite alarming--it only takes a few mutations for H5N1 or H7N9 to infect the upper respiratory system where they will become airborne. MERS, at the moment, seems not very contagious, but it is very much like a cold virus and we don't know enough about it to know what might make it more contagious. These are all quite deadly... while Ebola is dramatic, it does not have the potential to cause widespread death that the respiratory viruses have.

The entire article and the reader comments are golden, and should be read. If such a pandemic hits, either be the first one to the hospital, or don’t go at all!
