Wal-Mart Stores plans to say goodbye to the minimum wage.
The huge retailers chief executive, Doug McMillon, said Wednesday that the company plans to end minimum-wage pay for its workers in the future. It is our intention over time that we will be in a situation where we dont pay minimum wage at all, he said.
That plan would put Wal-Mart in a league with Costco Wholesale and Gap Inc. among employers committing to pay workers more than the minimum wage. President Barack Obama has publicly saluted Costco, Gap and several small businesses for voluntarily raising starting pay.
The federal government sets a $7.25 an hour minimum wage, but many states now have higher pay floors.

Walmart needs to keep and retain workers and that means paying them a fair wage for the hours they put in so they can afford to buy the company’s products.
Economic reality is a cold and uncaring master. If they bump up the wage, they will have to make the workers more efficent and won’t be able to hire as many people. If they don’t, they will lose money and eventually go under. There is no way around that.
If minimum wage is $7.25, all they have to do is pay $7.26 and they are paying more than minimum wage.
Son worked there, even the most incompetent employees were not making minimum wage beyond their first year. If you weren’t fired for the incompetence, then you were guaranteed a 0.20/hr raise every year, minimum.
Unless they figured out some way to pay less than the minimum wage.
If they pay more then they might attract more efficient workers to begin with.
Wow. An extra $6 to $8 dollars per week every year. Who could be dissatisfied with that?
Most of the wal mart employees where I live aren’t worth minimum wage. Don’t know where anything is located. Rude, slow. And heaven help if you ask a question. You better be fluent in Ebonics.
If you are a crappy worker - more than you deserve. More than most people see in pay raises in the private sector year over year.
Truth is there are very few Walmart workers on minimum wage....almost none.
Give-in to Intimidation.
I am no fan of Walmarts either way.
Their service sucks and they drive competitors that offer decent service out of business.
Walmart is currying favor with The Regime to protect its emerging monopoly status and keep the looming wolf of heavier regulation away from its door.
This is why it is dark in their stores and the restrooms are a joke. They’ve caved to the Environuts. Would not be shocked if they voluntarily accepted unionization at some point either.
I’m not going to say one way or the other about whether Wal Mart should or shouldn’t. Doesn’t matter to me. It’s their money. But that is just the dig to me. WalMart is dominating the store industry in the USA and other countries as well. They have basically put all other grocery stores out of business or close to it. We have a couple of others around town here other than WalMart, but the prices are about $2.00 per item more on most things. WalMart can out price anyone. They are making mega billions. So, it ain’t gonna hurt their profit line to give good employees a bump up. We ain’t talking $5.00 to $7.00 an hour here. We are probably thinking only a couple, three at most an hour bump if that. So, good for them. It will put them in a better light. They have gotten to be a bit of a bully now that they are the big box store on the block. Our store is getting a bit trashy and stuff all over the place, laying on the floor, no one picking up clothes that get just thrown back on the rack. They just leave it that way and you can pick through it the best you can if you want too. Getting about as bad as Sears and Pennys.
There is one way. Raise the price of their goods to cover the increase in wages.
$7.26 X 29 hours 59 minutes per week.
After he left they did start hiring more part time employees. While he was there, the only employees that could be part time were checkers. Everyone else had to be full time.
But the jobs are meant to be for college students or kiddos starting out. They aren’t meant to be for you and me to support our families.
So that argument doesn’t tug at my heart strings at all.
That is interesting. It seems around here business thrive because of WalMart. We are willing to pay more to avoid them for groceries, etc. And pick wise times as much as possible to visit them to avoid the herd for other staples.
And compare the number of people in a Whole Foods at any given time around here to the number of people in a WalMart. Whole Foods are wall to wall with customers.
Sprouts alone may push WalMart out of the produce/deli business.
And the JCPenneys around here are impeccably maintained. WalMarts not as well, but not bad.
With your attitude, you wouldn't be worth the extra $8. I wished that I'd have hired you in one of my past business...just so I could have fired you, with your arrogant attitude.
Not in my area, we have a huge variety of big name, and little name, and single owned markets and supermarkets, at the Walmart that I use, the Von's is in the same strip mall.
Being a careful shopper, my shopping consists of visiting 5 various stores and markets as a routine.
Whole Foods is where the rich buy their Arugula, and I gave up on Sprouts years ago, those are part of the variety available to the more well off public, Walmart is still our favorite.
