Uh-oh:
We have to rethink the way we address Ebola infection control, because even a single infection is unacceptable, Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a news conference.
Frieden did not detail precisely how the extensive, government-issued safety protocols in place at many facilities might need to change or in what ways hospitals need to ramp up training for front-line doctors or nurses . . .
Officials have said [nurse Nina] Pham wore protective gear, including a gown, gloves, a mask and a face shield, while caring for Duncan on multiple occasions. But Ebola can easily infect those who come into contact with the bodily fluids of Ebola patients, and the smallest slip in putting on or taking off protective gear can open the door to the virus.
We need to consider the possibility that there could be additional cases, particularly among the health-care workers who cared for [Duncan] when he was so ill, Frieden said. We would not be surprised if we did see additional cases.
Hey, remember when our government was all gung-ho, assuring us they were going to stop it in its tracks? Heres he same guy, nine days ago:
Health officials stressed that they are confident they can control this situation and keep the virus from spreading in the U.S.
"We're stopping it in its tracks in this country," Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, declared during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
See if you can spot the unnerving detail in our new airport screening policy:
JFK airport is the first U.S. airport to begin screenings for Ebola. Washington Dulles International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, Chicago OHare International Airport and Hartsfield -- Jackson Atlanta International Airport will begin screenings this week.
Those five airports account for 94% of all the 150 travelers who on average arrive daily from those most affected countries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over the past 12 months, JFK received about half the passengers from those countries entering into the U.S., according to the CDC.
So what about that other six percent? Are we just hoping that no one in that remaining six percent has Ebola? Sure, its just nine people a day, but thats 45 people a week, about 180 a month . . . And before someone says, Oh, what are the odds of someone with Ebola getting on a plane and coming to the United States?, remember, this already happened.
Does this mean rethinking the U.S. troops in the hot zone over there?
Small numbers of highly-trained U.S. troops wearing full-body protective gear have been testing the blood of potential Ebola victims without coming into direct contact with them, the head of the U.S. Africa Command said Tuesday.
Army Gen. David Rodriguez initially said at a Tuesday Pentagon briefing that teams of three or four personnel working at mobile test labs were likely to have direct contact with Ebola victims. However, he later issued a correction to conform with White House and Pentagon policy directives against direct contacts by U.S. troops.
"I want to clarify my remarks," Rodriguez said in a statement. "U.S. military personnel working in the labs are not interacting with patients, only samples."
In last nights Senate debate here in Virginia:
Amid news that a health care worker in Dallas had become infected with the disease, both candidates agreed that President Barack Obama has been too slow to deal with the Ebola crisis.
[Sen. Mark] Warner said it may be time to consider restrictions on flights as some European nations have done, particularly with a nation like Liberia, where Ebola has spread so widely.
[GOP Senate candidate Ed] Gillespie said its too late to merely consider stopping flights from West Africa where there is an Ebola outbreak. Its time to impose a flight ban in that regard and thats what this administration should do.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
As the disease spreads in Africa the probability of more infected people getting off a plane a plane in the US will rise accordingly.
I mentioned this phenomenon yesterday. The language is subtly being ramped up from “Hey, no problem” to “Well, there could be very limited problems in isolated situations” to “We think there could be a problem” to “We don’t know WTF we don’t know, so yes, it’s time to panic. And we warned you!”
Before the last statement, you will see the elites running to a bolt hole.
Which may not save them.
“Rethink”???
Isn’t it their job to have ALREADY THOUGHT ABOUT it???
What the hell do they spend millions of dollars on?
Getting their buddies rich.
These assholes are being eaten alive across the entire blogosphere, and now even the NY Slimes and WaPo are on board with halting inbound flights from West Africa.
I’ve yet to look at it, but I heard O’Reilly came unglued about the West African flight thing last night.

I can only imagine what their internal poll numbers are telling them about what this is doing to them across the board in the upcoming election, which btw, has already started in Colorado.
They aren’t “controlling” or “preventing” infectious disease. The only reason this organization exists is to get funding for stupidity.
Damn good point! What are we paying these idiots for? It seems they move as every point of action is something fresh and unknown. News flash—this ain’t a dose of the space clap from Rigel IV, dammit! If these government entities are proving to be so ineffectual, why are they continuing to consume our treasure and returning nothing but confusion and inaction? Reminds me of the big-talkers from high school who talked big game but did nothing worth a hoot in hell when the gun went off!
Finding out why lesbos are fat.
The LA Times, certainly a voice for Democrats, admits today that only 85% of Ebola victims ever run a fever. The other 15% do not, so all the temperature checks at the airports will not guarantee that Ebola will not get into the country.
We have been lied to by government hacks once again. No wonder people are fed up.
WHY ARE WE NOT BANNING FLIGHTS FROM INFECTED COUNTRIES????
Sorry for the caps but this is insanity!
“Getting their buddies rich. “
No doubt a pandemic can make billions for political buddies.
“Frieden, you’re doing a heck of a job.”
O’Reilly really did become unhinged... not a rant, but pure anger.
I would like to see the head of the CDC go visit the nurse in her isolation ward wearing the same gear the hospital has been advised is “protocol”
or wait, would Mr Friedan be in a full spacesuit with contained filtered air supply?
Enquiring minds want to know
Because if they ban the flights from the infected countries ( well, actually passengers from those flights because I don't think there are any direct flights ), then the next logical step would be to close the southern border to keep out the infection, because certainly they will come in through Central America if they can't get in any other way. That is the last thing Obola wants to do.
