St. Louis Police Officer Fatally Shoots Teen Incident Sparks Protest Echoing Those in Nearby Ferguson, Mo.

An off-duty St. Louis police officer shot and killed a black teenager Wednesday evening, triggering protests in a metropolitan area that has been rattled by weeks of sometimes violent unrest in some neighborhoods following a high-profile police-involved shooting in August.
The white, six-year veteran of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, who was working as a private security officer, shot and killed Vonderrit Myers Jr., an 18-year-old black teen, following an alleged struggle and after the teen allegedly fired a pistol at the officer, according to the department’s chief.
The officer, 32, was patrolling the Shaw neighborhood in St. Louis when he saw three men acting suspiciously, according to Col. Sam Dotson, St. Louis’s chief of police, in a news conference hours after the shooting. When approached by the officer, the men fled and the officer chased them, first in his vehicle, then on foot.
One of the men stopped and approached the officer in what Col. Dotson described as an “aggressive manner” while the officer yelled at the teenager to stop and that he was under arrest, Col. Dotson said. The two then began fighting and the officer pulled off the teenager’s gray hooded sweatshirt before the teen turned to run from the officer, he said.
As the teen ran, he turned and fired three shots from a Ruger 9mm pistol before the officer returned fire, according to the police chief. The suspect’s pistol jammed, yet he didn’t drop the weapon and kept attempting to fire, according to Col. Dotson. The officer eventually shot and killed the teen, firing 17 rounds.

“Yes, the teen was black. And the officer was white. Yes, the officer fired several times. And it all unfolded in the St. Louis metro area.
But in this case, the 18-year-old was armed, and he fired on the officer first, St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said.
Police didn’t name the slain teen, but the teen’s former attorney, Peter Cohen, identified him as Vonderrit Deondre Myers. Myers’ parents informed Cohen of their son’s death, the attorney said.”

“According to police, the officer was off-duty and patrolling the neighborhood as an employee of a private security company when he drove past three men at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. As the officer drove past the group, one of the males began to run. When the officer made a U-turn, they fled, police said.
“One of them ran in a way that the officer believed that he was armed with a gun – holding his waist band, not running at full stride,” Dotson said, referring to the 18-year old.
The officer, who was wearing a Metropolitan Police Department uniform, drove through the streets after them, then left his car and chased the group on foot. One of the men then turned toward the officer and approached him “in an aggressive manner,” Dotson said. The 18-year-old and the officer got into a physical altercation.
Dotson said the man then ran up a hill and fired three times at the officer before the officer returned fire. Investigators recovered a 9mm Ruger at the scene, which Dotson said was used by the 18-year-old, whom he described as “no stranger to law enforcement.” Police said the weapon was reported stolen on Sept. 26.”

“The way that one of the men ran — grabbing at his waistband, slightly lopsided — indicated that he was carrying a weapon, so the officer chased him, Dotson said.
Ballistic evidence recovered from the scene indicates that the man fired three rounds at the officer before his weapon jammed, Dotson said, adding that the gun was also recovered.”

I’m going to go out on a limb, here, and suggest that maybe Mommy Dearest is lying through her teeth.
This dude chose poorly. He chose to initiate a shootout with a cop rather than turn himself in. He chose poorly and paid with his life. But it was his choice to initiate that sequence of events. Don’t see how they can blame racism or any other factor here.
Wow, a sandwich that fires bullets! No wonder he stole it!
