IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — Five teens were killed early Saturday morning, and a sixth was in serious condition at a local hospital, after a fiery crash on the 5 Freeway, authorities said.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi told City News Service that the teens who died “were burned beyond recognition.”

The single-vehicle crash occurred at the Route 133 interchange with the 5 Freeway at 2:12 A.M., according to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher. Broadcast reports said the group was returning from a late-night trip to Knotts Berry Farm.

There was no identification available on the crash victims, although a freelance videographer said a CHP sergeant at the scene told him they appeared to be in their mid- to late-teens. The injured teen taken to Mission Hospital is a boy, Concialdi said.

It was the second motor vehicle crash in the Southland in less than six hours that killed five people.

Are the “Moms” going to “Demand Action”? We’ve got to do something about these assault vehicles.

It’s the high capacity roads that are so lethal.

Clearly we need roads that only hold one vehicle, with a three day waiting period and a background check to get on the road.

Let me guess: “high rate of speed”

Among the possible explanations (or course more than one could be in play):

Speed

Booze/drugs

Simple fatigue

Basic inexperience

Texting

much more:

“Broadcast reports said the group was returning from a late-night trip to Knotts Berry Farm.”

KBF is a theme park with rides, etc...could’ve been a bunch of kids returning from a Friday night of fun after the park closed (a lot of these parks have Halloween themed party’s that stay open late) and nothing more...sad to just make assumptions before facts...

Yes,as I said it could have been simple fatigue (God knows that *I’m* usually tired at 2AM) or simple inexperience. But having worked in a big city ER for a long time I’m better acquainted with the details of serious motor vehicle accidents than many. And that having been said,*I*,at least, don’t have nearly enough info to reach a definitive “diagnosis” in this particular case.

you are correct - they were coming home from “Knott’s Scary Farm” at Knott’s. It’s the Halloween haunt/scare fest and closes at 2:00 a.m.

As a teen I was limited to driving a pickup truck. I later learned the family did this deliberately to avoid allowing too many in the cab together egging each other on.

Or it could have been simple driver fatigue. I won’t take that bet however.

Turns out the driver, who is 16 years old, had a restricted drivers license, meaning he was NOT allowed to drive between 11pm-5am and could only drive if he had someone over the age of 25 in the car with him

I live 5 miles from the scene, and wouldn’t be surprised if my kids know some of them.

My kids go there every year.

God knows young people don’t drive as smart as more experienced people, and when I was younger I escaped problems due to good luck.

Nothing to be said but prayers. Anything else is callous.

Apparently driving daddy’s BMW, or maybe a BMW that daddy gave the kid.

Once upon a time, kids had to work their a****s off to buy a car. I sure did.

Not any more.

Driver’s license restrictions for youthful, inexperienced drivers exist for this very reason. The fault is on the neglectful PARENTS who apparently wanted to be “cool” and let their teenagers go in a fast, powerful car on a 70 mph freeway in the middle of the night. They could have done the “uncool” thing and dropped them off in a minivan and picked them up at the end of a night’s fun. Completely preventable. Rest in leace, babies. There will sadly be no peace for a lifetime for those left behind.

Another story said the driver was 16, not licensed to drive after 11pm. There’s no good reason to have a 16 y/o driving a BMW, and no parent should allow their kid to haul more than one passenger at a time until they’ve had their license for a year or two. Too easy to district with 6 in a car and that inexperienced a driver. So sad for all the families. Every parent’s worst nightmare.

That's what teenagers do - make bad decisions and sometimes pay for them. But for the Grace of God, I would have preceded them due to my youthful indiscretions. It was always worse with friends in the car - especially girls, because the budding hormones want to impress. My heart goes out to their families and others who loved them.
