Dems make risky bet against Mitch McConnell: Quadruples money spent for Alison Grimes
The Hill ^ | 10/01/2014 | Alexander Bolton

Democrats in Washington are taking a risky bet by quadrupling their investment in Alison Lundergan Grimes, a young and largely unproven challenger, who is running against Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.).

Spending a fresh $1.4 million on a statewide TV ad bashing McConnell is a gamble for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), which has six vulnerable incumbents and a long-held Democratic seat in Iowa to defend. In Kentucky, Democrats are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Recent polls show that Grimes is trailing McConnell by an average of 5 points. Massively boosting party spending on her campaign when independent handicappers view her as a long shot could attract criticism — especially from sitting senators worried about their own races. Yet, a decision not to go after McConnell in October would be seen as ceding the race to the minority leader.

Some operatives say the key to Democrats retaining the Senate is to play effective defense. Republicans have to net six seats to claim control of the upper chamber.

But many Democratic donors would love to take down the Senate GOP leader, whom they view as the Senate’s obstructionist in chief. And they like playing offense.

“We’re constantly hearing … how the Republican conference is targeting Democrats so, quite frankly, it’s refreshing to see the game played the other way,” said Alan Kessler, a major Democratic donor.

“I wouldn’t sell Alison Grimes short. I’ve met her; I’ve talked to her. She is a real go-getter,” he said.

“When he said his No. 1 objective was getting rid of Barack Obama, what kind of message is that for the American people?” Kessler added.

Some political experts expressed surprise that the Senate Democratic campaign committee thinks Grimes can win, given the direction of recent polls.

All aimed at the ‘low information’ (moron) voters.

Unfortunately, there is no shortage on morons. But, hopefully, not enough in Kentucky.

Ever been to Kentucky? It’s full of them. They do make good moonshine and bourbon though.

They’ve been reading my posts. A LOT of us KY freepers and other Kentuckian Republicans consider it a higher priority to clean out the dead wood from the R’s than control the senate, since controlling it with GOPe is not a success.

i.e. we’re voting for Grimes. It will be my first vote for a D since 1972

I don’t care if Mitch Loses- we get a democrat either way

I hope he does lose- it won’t teach the GOP any lesson, though- they are not called the stupid party for nothing

Might want to reconsider. The way politics in Kentucky works if she gets elected you'll probably have her for the rest of your natural born life.

They probably smell blood in the water. If conservatives don’t turn out for McConnell, he might be vulnerable.

As much as I dislike the turtle of the senate, this is enough to want me to see the Democrats defeated.

So, even the democrats can be stupid come election time. They should have just laid low and taken their victory.

Voting for a Democrat is voting for a traitor!

With the GOP in control, men like Cruz and Rand will have more power as well.

If that happens the chances of repealing or drastically weakening Obamacare dwindles.

My husband is a KYian and listens to Kentucky Sports Radio every day (basketball is the state religion there, for those who don’t know). Grimes was on the other day, and he said she sounded great - all the right words, etc. From what I’ve seen of her, she knows exactly which issues to press (gun rights, tops). And there’s no getting around that she’s a half-decent looking woman up against a mealy-mouthed, turtle-faced old “insider.”

I don’t think McConnell lasts. Too bad, so sad.

Hard to say.

Kentucky (McConnell): 86% white, 8% black, 3% Hispanic, 1% Asian. Romney 60%, Obama 38%.

It's possible that one term of Grimes is enough for Kentuckyans. Given that demographic, if they do vote for Grimes, it's probably intentional to oust McConnell.

Interesting strategy. Of the 11 competitive Senate races I’d pick this one as least likely for the rats to prevail in. And therefore the race that the Rats would be most likely to throw over the firewall.
Could mean that the turtle is in more trouble than we think - or - it could just be a testament to the vast amount of cash at the rats’ disposal — most of it stolen from the public trough.

The question is whether McConnell will draw money away from other, closer races.

Ya know, I’m not from KY, but it will make my night if McConnell loses to Grimes. I cordially invite the GOP to osculate my gluteii.

Oh please, I have heard the gope “conservative” apologist on here for weeks shoveling this load of BS. Really you believe that load of crap? Cruz will not be allowed anywhere near a position of power by your beloved gope cronies. Straw man argument extraordinar...

Aside from Reagan when he was president 8 yrs. When have conservatives been allowed to run anything in Washington DC or the RNC?

I believe this is the key to the Dem's move:

But many Democratic donors would love to take down the Senate GOP leader, whom they view as the Senate’s obstructionist in chief.

Now, what McConnell should do is take that line and plug it straight into as many ads as possible, combining it with past McConnell statements about ObamaCare, etc. If there are any appropriate quotes along that line from Dems, so much the better. The Dems trying so hard to unseat McConnell puts the lie to the idea he is supportive of Obama, and defuses some of the opposition from the right. McConnell is disliked by many, but the Obama agenda is hated by the majority of KY voters.
