USDA offers $31.5M for healthier food stamp diet

A division of the Agriculture Department is making $31.5 million in funding available to help people on food stamps obtain healthier foods.

The department’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is making the funding available to help those enrolled in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which offers nutrition assistance to millions of low-income Americans.

"Too many struggling families do not have adequate access to nutritious food," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Monday as he announced the new funding. "Helping families purchase more fresh produce is clearly good for families' health, helps contribute to lower health costs for the country, and increases local food sales for family farmers.”

The agency wants funded projects to examine how to increase the purchase of fruits and vegetables, the department said, and the funding could subsidize pilot projects, multiyear community projects or large-scale multiyear proposals.

The funding stems from the farm bill Congress passed earlier this year, which created the Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive program. It combines funding for both fiscal 2014 and 2015.

Through the farm bill, Congress cut $8 billion from SNAP this year—only one percent of the program’s budget. Republicans wanted to slash $39 billion from SNAP over the next decade and Democrats proposed a $4 billion cut.

Powdered milk, oatmeal, veg-all, fruit cocktail, beans and rice.

There. You’ve been fed.

"Too many struggling families do not have adequate access to nutritious food,"

What absolute and utter hogwash. Please state examples, of course they do not.

Easy, peasey.. Ban the purchase of soft drinks, chips, cookies, chocolate milk, any meat but chicken and turkey, anything imported, most bakery products (except for whole grain bread), all desserts, frozen convenience foods, and anything else you don’t have to make from scratch with food stamps...

You’d see the gemedats either get healthy or find jobs to pay for the stuff they want.

The government is going to waste $31.5 million taxpayer dollars putting food stamp recipients on the Moochelle diet? Are you kidding me? Why not just cut back on the food stamps?

They’d try to sell their foodstamps to people who know how to cook that kind of food,

then they’d go and buy the banned items.

They’re lazy, but crafty - they know how to “work it”.

Absolutely.

I like mixing in a can of it with my tuna-helper.

Yes, that’s living large — but it’s on my own dime.

"Too many struggling families do not have adequate access to nutritious food," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Monday

What a lying dog. Go in the absolute worst neighborhoods in this country, every-single-one I absolutely guarantee you is a short bus ride away from a supermarket that has fruits and vegetables up the wazoo. And YES incredibly welfare provides bus fare. I hate this crap when they lie and blow through tens of millions of taxpayer dollars without showing the public one scintilla of evidence. They're ripping off the public is what they are doing.

These people flunked math, right?

There are more than 31 million people on food stamps, what will an extra 50 cents do? A bigger bag of chips?

It should be taught at home but it isn’t and I have to say that my DIL really learned a lot when she had to take classes on nutrition because she was babysitting some children whose mother was on assistance. But she took it seriously and most of the other’s just went because they were required.

Why spend money? Just limit what you can buy with them! Just like WIC.. problem solved, no more money spent.

The Agriculture Department has NO RIGHT to do this! Oh, wait, maybe they do.

But ObamaCare has no right to dictate..... Oh, wait..

Another $34+ million down the welfare rat hole. It will all end up in the pockets of Democrat community organizers and interest groups, not in any poor person’s stomach.

Totally agree with you. No food stamps should go to unhealthy processed foods. Trouble is, many recipients do not know how to cook. No kidding. They’ve been raised on unhealthy packaged crud and now cost us billions in healthcare payments.

There is a reason that food stamps is in the Department of Agriculture. The purpose is to sell food for big Agra, like Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland. If it was to feed poor people, it would be a part of Health and Human Services.
