The Tide of the Culture War Shifts (Bruce Braley goes after Joni Ernst on personhood)
The New York Times ^ | September 28, 2014 | The Editorial Board

Posted on 09/29/2014 6:31:33 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Not long ago, it would have been unusual for a Democratic senatorial candidate in Iowa to run a powerful abortion-rights television ad like the one recently broadcast by Representative Bruce Braley.

The ad lists in detail the anti-abortion positions taken by Mr. Braley’s Republican opponent, Joni Ernst. In the State Senate, the ad says, she sponsored a “personhood” amendment (declaring a fertilized egg to be a person) that would have the effect of outlawing abortion even in cases of rape or incest, and would also ban many common forms of birth control. Ms. Ernst is even shown saying at a debate that she favors criminal punishment for doctors who perform abortions; the ad describes her position as “radical.”

Ms. Ernst’s personhood ideas, shared by at least five other Republican candidates for United States Senate this year, have been radical for years. What’s new is that Democrats are increasingly willing to say so. For years they were cowed by the religious right into changing the subject when abortion or birth control or same-sex marriage came up. But now, increasingly assured that public opinion supports their positions, Democrats have become more aggressive in challenging Republicans about their beliefs.

In Colorado, Senator Mark Udall, a Democrat, has sharply criticized the views of his challenger, Representative Cory Gardner, about women’s reproductive rights, running an ad that points out the dangers in the Life at Conception Act that Mr. Gardner has helped sponsor in the House. Senator Kay Hagan, Democrat of North Carolina, continually reminds voters that her opponent, Thom Tillis, has worked to make contraception less accessible. As speaker of the State House, Mr. Tillis also made it far more difficult to get an abortion. Similar campaigns are going on in Michigan and Montana....

You might be able to peddle that fish in Manhattan, Albany or Brooklyn, but Des Moines, Cedar Rapids or Waterloo? I don't think so.

Hard to say. This strikes at the very heart of life, what defines a human being as a human being.

There is some very real spiritual warfare going on here and people can be fooled by lies.

I lived in Iowa from the age of 14 until I was 41, except for the time I spent in the service. I am now sure that Lieutenant Colonel Ernst will win that senate seat.

Nothing is more important to a libtard than sex without consequences. Not even loosey goosey voting rules. Not even weed.

Braley is also slinging the dreaded ‘Koch Brothers’ taunt at Ernst. Like anybody but political junkies know who they are.

She countered back with Steyney, or whatever his name is.

yep, I thought the same thing when I started seeing those koch brother references in his recent attacks.

I turned to my wife, who is a solid conservative, but not necessarily versed in the details of the swamp, and asked her if she had ever heard of the koch brothers. Her reply...”I have no idea who they are”

those he is pandering to, are already gonna vote for him anyway....his attack ads are not really working.

I also think he will lose this election...I will pop a giant bottle of bubbly when that ***hat goes down in flames in November

Is it 1969 again?

Hell, I’ve been here 10+ years and I didn’t know who they were until Dingy Harry started wailing about them 7 or 8 months ago.

Since then I’ve learned my company buys and sells Koch products! Whoo - hoo!

yeah, you are correct. I had not heard of them either, until dingy started in on them. good point.

anyway....braley is my current congresscritter...I had the occasion to sit next to him on a flight from cedar rapids to chicago a year ago...he was reading one of caros books on LBJ.......I told him that LBJ was an idiot, and damaged this country immeasurably with his great society crap.

he got really quiet, and could not get off that plane fast enough when it hit the gate. funny as hell.

Yet Iowa sent Harkin to the Senate for 6 terms..he and Grassley were the "odd couple" of the Senate.

When Harkin announced his retirement (even though he would easily have been re-elected, I felt it was because he thought the Senate was lost to the Dems (even if he kept Iowa) and he didn't want to spend his last term in the minority..

The resume is so important. We will have a female President at some point, and I hope it's not one of the female idiots (both parties) currently or formerly in the US Senate. An articulate, intelligent, conservative woman with an impressive military record has potential to be a qualified President.

I hope she wins.

Ew-w-w- "Koch Brothers!"

Would that be "Classic" Koch,

or "Diet" Koch,

or maybe "Cherry" Koch?

“For years they were cowed by the religious right into changing the subject when abortion or birth control or same-sex marriage came up.”

Interesting. That’s all Democrats talk about in Colorado. And that’s been true for 4-6 years. You would think they have only one plank in their party platform. “1. All fertilized eggs are fair game.”

I didn’t know about the Koch Brothers until I read about them on FR and after that Dingy Harry started spilling his bile about them. I found it interesting that I’ve seen ads on TV (I think primarily on FNC) produced by/for them. Not sure if they’re running in the rest of the country or only in select markets but they’re nice ads that just show all the industries they’re involved in and number of people they employee, etc.

Here in Oregon, Merkeley is also throwing the Koch brothers money at his R opponent, Dr. Monica Wehby. Every add has pictures of her with the Koch brothers, in doctored photos. I bet she has never even met them.

Merkeley is one of the seven Senators that signed Shumer's letter to the IRS to investigate the teaparty 501c4's. He is a bastard.

The Democrat’s message is Murder is ok just as long as the you don’t doesn’t define the one your killing as a person.
