I.e. key card employee access/armed security guards at entry points/video surveillance/employees go thru a real background check/etc.
I know nothing about this particular airport. but I did visit another major airport for work.
In the instructions for getting to the office were the words “go through the hole in the fence”. We ended up beside an airplane within about 3 minutes with our escort. Our IDs were never checked and our bags were never searched.
Many of these types of facilities are not manned nor do they have much security past a chain link fence and a lock on the door. There are a number of navigational systems besides radar that are critical.
Before we weren’t a country with borders we never had these foreigner problems so we didn’t need to secure everything like a prison.
This enroute employs around 500 controllers on a 24/7 basis, but mid shift may only have around 25.
Security is fair, razor wire high fence, armed guard at gate, coded locks on doors, picture id at all times.
Certainly would be considered a 'soft' target for an assault, but good enough to deter anyone who does not like getting shot at.
Getting out is just as hard as getting in. I worked there for 13 years before I could get a transfer out.
