BERLIN: Germany said today it would not withdraw support for US action against jihadists in Iraq and Syria following a reported ultimatum from Philippine Islamist militants reportedly threatening to kill a German hostage.
A foreign ministry spokeswoman said the German government had heard about the report but stressed that threats are not an appropriate way to influence our policy in Syria and Iraq.
There will be no change to our Syria and Iraq policy, she added.
A terrorism monitoring group reported yesterday that the extremists said they would kill one of two German hostages unless a 250 million pesos (US$5.62 million) ransom is paid and Berlin stops supporting the US-led campaign against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
US-based SITE, which monitors extremists activities worldwide, released a picture attributed to the Abu Sayyaf group showing a masked militant with a machete beside a grey-haired white man.
A younger white woman with close-cropped hair was also shown, while other masked men stood behind them, armed with assault rifles and machine guns.
The Abu Sayyaf, a small band of Islamic militants based in the southern Philippines, vowed to kill one of two hostages if the two demands were not met within 15 days, according to SITE.
The foreign ministry spokeswoman said the German government had set up a crisis task force on the case and we will of course continue our efforts to secure a release.
The German government has ruled out joining air strikes or any ground offensive in the fight against IS jihadists.
But it announced late last month that it would send weapons to the Peshmerga Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq to help them fend off the militants.

They caught another one. This world is getting crazy. Stay safe out there
The way to deal with these savages when they pull this is to drag out three or four of the animals in Guantanamo and cut THEIR heads off!!
For every non muslim slain by a muslim, innocent or otherwise. We slay 10,000. I don’t care if they are innocent or not. I really don’t, does that make me a terrible person?
If beheading makes us squeamish, the J.J.Pershing method of shooting them with bullets dipped in pig fat would be equally effective.
I think the Europeans have just about finally had enough.
However, there are disturbing reports in the German press that Germany's offer to help the Kurds is off to a slow start because the helicopters, fighter aircraft and transport planes are unusable due to lack of maintenance.
yeah, if only they cared! The ONLY way is to kill them all, that’s what I’m advocating. I’m through pretending there’s ANY way to get by other than nuking them all (figuratively is fine, as long as there are none left standing)
Every muslim needs to go. Start now.
Perhaps a worldwide extermination campaign against militant Muslims is the appropriate response at this point.
Sad that muslims have infiltrated the PI to such an extent. I thought the govt paid the southern militants off not long ago to go crawl back under a rock?
That general tactic was used in WWII. Got a lot of bad press afterwards.
Does it really matter though? If muslims would stop killing, raping, pillaging, and marrying 13 year olds, stop mutilating female genitalia, stop stoning, get rid of sharia law, and act in a civilized manner. Then I think I would be more sympathetic. It will eventually come down to us or them. One side will need to be destroyed. That day is fast approaching.
Obama is trying to destabilize Syria now. What he wanted to do all along. Get Assad.
Notice how crazy since Bergdahl trade?
Sadly, though, his successors embraced Islam and were known in particular for their destruction of works of art as being idolatry. Much of the art in China and Persia was destroyed by Islamic Mongols—basically anything that had a depiction of a living being in it.
No.
It makes you a logical person.
