Every spring, we have a cycling event that covers the entire Coachella Valley in Kalifornia....the "Tour de Palm Springs" attracts thousands.

Our little area is on the route for the 'hundred mile' group, and we literally don't get in the cars that day due to them riding four or five abreast and totally ignoring any rules of the road -- this neighborhood consists of stop signs versus lights, and it's as if those don't exist.

Basically not regard for others. He should be sentenced for negligent homicide if she dies. And if she’s brain dead, lock him away.

There are bike lanes in Central Park - close to the West Side. I gave up years ago riding them because only maniacs were on them. No family, no ordinary rider need apply.

I am a civil engineer by trade, and this is why I will never, ever put my seal on a design for a bike lane.

Because cyclists aren't required to carry liability insurance, the family of this victim will likely be pursuing legal action against anybody involved in the design, construction and operation of the park facilities -- simply because those parties are the only ones with the resources and insurance coverage to pay an enormous settlement.

Yep, that was reckless behavior.
A homicide resulting from the taking of an unreasonable and high degree of risk is usually considered criminally negligent manslaughter.
Jurisdictions are divided on the question of whether the defendant must be aware of the risk. Modern criminal codes generally require a consciousness of risk, although, under some codes, the absence of this element makes the offense a less serious homicide.

Starting in 1991, I did every Seattle to Portland 200 mile bike ride until 2008 (just lost interest). 10,000 riders was the limit but I bootlegged it the last five or six years. Who knows how many others were doing it. Some drivers just went with it as a fun two day event. Some spread tacks on the road the night before.

In a sane world, that would do her no good.

But, then...

I live in Texas. I ride a large motorcycle. I am 70 years old. I have liability insurance. I have registration certificates and a license plate. I have to have a Drivers License with a motorcycle certification. I must pay for a safety sticker every year. I have to obey traffic laws and pay taxes to own my motorcycle.

Which of these do bicyclist have to do?

20 years ago when we had an infestation hereabouts they made this mororcyclist hate bicycle weenies. I still feel the bile rise when I see a couple of riders in their Exotic Insect costumes, but the behaviour they exhibited back then doesn’t occur now. There was a pretty high casualty rate among riders. This is, after all, the Southland.

Thirteen months ago, I was walking along the path in Huntington Beach, Calif. when struck from behind by a hit-and-run cyclist.

I was knocked down so hard, my shoulder was badly fractured. Since then I have had 3 surgeries.

I have explored any and all measures for law enforcement to slow down the cyclists. There is a posted speed limit where I was clobbered, but zero enforcement effort, by two agencies.

I repeat law enforcement is entirely not interested.

The lesson I have learned, is stay away from those paths, period.

Since I didn’t see the person that hit me from behind, I cannot opine on his/her race, politics, dress, style of bike.

As an aside, I was once an avid cyclist, including 100 mile races and triathlons up to ironman distance. I have no animosity towards cycling or cyclists. I still ride some.

“These A-holes give all bikers a bad name.

And they want special rights and privileges like a four-foot clearance when being passed.”

Should those who ride bicycles on the same road with cars, that don’t understand that their $4000 bicycle is no match for a 2000# vehicle, on “any” road, be riding their bicycle on the road?

You might think common sense would trump ‘special rights & privileges.

"The only time I ever came close to losing my life in NYC was from a messenger on a bike zippng in and out of traffic at top speed on Lexington Avenue."

Righto - they don't look for people. Now a long time ago [1935 or so] when I was a kid walking in Central Park we were only worried about the horses on the bridal path. It would be racist to mention the gangs.

That's a time trial bike, they're the type used in triathlons - they're made for high speed cruising, but aren't safe in close quarter situations.

A lot of people spend $10,000 or more on them.

This guy did a lot of stupid things but buying a $4000 bike is not one of them. Nothing wrong with paying more for a quality item.

A walking-stick, or some would say a staff, ‘accidentally’ swung in their direction at just the right moment when you are looking in another direction, does wonders for quickly stopping such inconsiderate individuals from harming others.

Just FYI.

Ahem. I believe the correct term is “cyclist”, not “biker”. I should know. I used to ride a pretty nice HD Sportster quite a bit and had no problems being known as a Biker.

You really should not confuse a cyclist with a real Biker. *evil grin*

See My Previous, please.

As a real Biker, I have to smile when I think of the possibility that one of those cyclists might collide with this really nice Sportster. Hogs are not lightweight vehicles, and they will most definitely stop a mere cyclist on contact.
