'Giant magnetic explosion on sun' racing to Earth

Scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say an “extreme” solar flare has been detected and while Earth appears to be in the bull’s-eye, exactly which part of the planet will see the biggest impact isn’t yet known.

Such phenomenon can disrupt power grids, radio transmissions and other electronics, and in a worst-case scenario could actually take such systems down, perhaps for extended periods.

Officials with the federal agency said the flare is near the center of the sun and happened at 1:45 EDT Wednesday.

Rut Roh. Lucky for us congress is back in session and can quickly pass a bill to stop the sun from doing any damage to us. Algore, please pick up the courtesy phone.

While the administration was busy throwing a trillion dollars of “Stimmalost” money to their cronies, they didn’t have enough spare change left over to harden the grid.

Curent page for (/11/2014.
Two CME’s, one from the 9, the other from yesterday.
Yesterday being an X 1.6.

As an aside, the Carrington event was interesting in that Earth had just been hit with a CME that had cleared the path for the Carrington flare to hit us, a CME of unknown density which arrived more rapidly than usual.

I’d just like to apologize to everyone for my carbon footprint.
I’m pretty sure this is all my fault.

A strong solar flare is blasting its way to Earth, but the worst of its power looks like it will barely skim above the planet and not cause many problems.

It has been several years since Earth has had a solar storm of this size coming from sunspots smack in the middle of the sun, said Tom Berger, director of the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado. The flare on the sun barely hits the “extreme” on forecasters’ scale, but with its worst effects missing Earth it is only looking “potentially strong” at most when it arrives at Earth as a solar storm, he said.

So while the power grid may see fluctuations because the storm will cause changes in Earth’s magnetic field, it won’t knock power systems off line, Berger said. It may cause slight disturbances in satellites and radio transmissions but nothing major.

Another Carrington event would probably result in some small fires here, considering all the antenna leads I have coming into the house. Heck, I've had serious sparking going on in the past just because a t-storm was 5 miles away.

Someone tell these global warming Nazi's that the sun is the reason we have the unpredicted heating and cooling of our planet.

It's not due to anyone's SUV nor my 550 HP Cobra GT 500.

Ouch.
I recall the 1989 solar storm only in that we were without power because the local transformer, er, transformed.
Looking north from our front porch showed us a red aurora angrily grilling the sky.
The transformer, about six or so miles away, had let out an audible hum, buzz, and then a double flash as it first arced and then failed in a blinding fireball.
Or, as it was later put, “It said ‘Effing BOOOM’!” where the two words represent the two stages of the transformer transforming into scrap.

Pretty sure it is. I can ease your guilt though. Just hand over the keys to the Cobra and I'll ensure it's properly taken care of to, umm, help Gaia and all that crap her beloved plant and animal children...

I am looking for some clarification on this information.

2014-09-11 05:01 UTC A Pair of CMEs

G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storms remain in the forecast for September 12th as a result of the coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the R1 (Minor) solar flare observed on the 9th. The latest WSA-Enlil model run has the CME associated with yesterday’s R3 (Strong) solar flare arriving mid to late day on that same day. A G3 (Strong) Geomagnetic Storm Watch has been issued for September 13th due to the combined influence of these two events with G1 (Minor) storming anticipated to continue into September 14th. In addition, the S1 (Minor) solar radiation storm that is in progress as a result of the eruption yesterday is expected to persist for the next few days. Keep in mind that the forecast periods listed are in Universal Time so aurora watchers in the northern U.S. should be looking for possible activity both Thursday and Friday nights. Stay tuned for updates.

From what I have been reading, it appeared it was the first CME was to give a glancing blow. Has anyone seen any prediction of how directly the second CME will hit us? How fast it is traveling?
