ISIS in Iraq: Canada to send special ops soldiers as advisers

Harper announces deployment of 'several dozen' military advisers for 'up to 30 days' to help Kurds.

Canada's next contribution to the fight against ISIS in Iraq will be "several dozen" members of the Armed Forces, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today — and CBC News has learned that includes special operations forces.

The contingent of special operations forces will work closely with U.S. forces but remain under full command of Canada's Chief of Defence Staff.

The forces will come from the Special Operations Regiment. No specifics were available on what type of work they'd be doing, but Harper has said the Canadian Forces deployed to Iraq won't be involved in combat.

A spokesman for Harper described the broader Canadian mission as one that provides "strategic and tactical counsel to Iraqi forces before they start tactical operations" against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, also called ISIL.

I agree its a small contingent, but they’re going to be deployed in the Kurdish autonomous region where they’ll (hopefully) have a greater impact.

CSOR is similar to the US Army Rangers and likely will be helping train the Peshmerga in special ops.
I would not be surprised if members of JTF2 are also deployed covertly, since rarely does the government discuss JTF2. Members of JTF2 have in the past, operated with the US JSOC and the UK's SAS and SBS in Afghanistan and Libya. Facta Non Verba is their motto, something that the Bathhouse boy could learn from.

That's nice but why doesn't he send military aid to Christians? Why must it always be muslims? What long-term good can come from arming and training more bands of muslim lunatics?

I’m not in the Canadian Forces, but as I understand CSOR and JTF2, members are recruited from the Canadian Army, RCN, and RCAF, so there are bound to be some ‘Patricias’ in the ranks. I know of a Navy fellow who is a member of one of these units.

Let me explain.

Canada is roughly 10% the size of the US in population.

"Several dozen" turns out to be about 35. Proportionally, this works out to about 350.

Does that sound better?

I don’t think you will see the Princess Pat’s in this one. This will be a special forces and RCAF operation, if it gets that far.

Which (non-existent) Christian militia would you like Harper to support?

Several cities in Iraq are defended by Christian militias. It would be nice if Canada or the USA could help them with training or weapons. But that would be seen as politically incorrect. So all of our aid goes to muslim savages.

I do not personally consider the Kurds "muslim savages".

They really are sheltering Christians and others from IS.
