The United States has launched a social media offensive against the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, setting out to win the war of ideas by ridiculing the militants with a mixture of blunt language and sarcasm.
Diplomats and experts are the first to admit that the digital blitz being waged on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube will never be a panacea to combat the jihadists.
But US officials see social media as an increasingly crucial battlefield as they aim to turn young minds in the Muslim world against groups like IS and Al-Qaeda.
For the past 18 months, US officials have targeted dozens of social network accounts linked to Islamic radicals, posting comments, photos and videos and often engaging in tit-for-tat exchanges with those which challenge America.
At the US State Department, employees at the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications (CSCC), created in 2011, manage an Arabic-language Twitter account set up in 2012,an English-language equivalentand a Facebook page launched this week.
A senior US State Department official described the strategy as a kind of cyber guerilla campaign.
"It is not a panacea, it is not a silver bullet," the official explained. "People exaggerate, people think this is worthless or they think it a magic thing that will make the extremists surrender. It is neither one of those. It is slow, steady...

The stupidity of this Administration never ceases to amaze.
“....ridiculing the militants with a mixture of blunt language and sarcasm.”
.
That is about the max that PC allows.
Bronx cheers would be considered unfair and over the top.
All Twitter, Facebook et al have is words and a possible photograph. That would be like FR trying to have a big effect on the Middle-East.
That is NOT gonna influence the Muslims one little bit.
Muslims understand violence and little else.
That’s it?? That’s our foreign policy in initiative to deal with ISIS? Man oh man, a particularly snarky post is sure to turn away the jihadi holding a freshly severed head or the newly minted Muslim teen with dreams of sharia.
Is it any wonder Putin laughs at us?
But 7.62 holes make invisible souls. That’s a better strategy than trying to make sociopaths feel bad about themselves on the interwebs...
And the Obama administration opens it’s devastating offensive.
That’s their chief weapon - blunt language.
Blunt language and sarcasm - wait, that’s two weapons.
Blunt language, sarcasm, and the comfy chair.
That’s it - three weapons.
(The older I get, the more I realize that life asymptotes to Monty Python)
This is junior high school thinking. Sounds about right.
IS (ISIS) has recruited from countries all over the world. India, too. They have recruited through Twitter and Facebook. I have seen a couple of the Hamas Facebook pages and even Afghanistan natives FB pages. Smart phone anyone? How do you think the Taliban know where our patrols are going and when? Farmers on their cell phones standing on the edge of the poppy field talking to their friends.
Exactly! I bet most of the ISIS can’t even read or write.
This is so obvious....
So why is the Administration allowing Twitter to be a mouthpiece for ISIS???
Answer: To help the Globalist have an excuse to send our troops to Syria. They have to get that gas pipeline for Saudi Arabia.
Who uses Twitter?
Answer: Primary Leftist in the Government. So you NOW KNOW who is doing this.
A hashtag campaign against ISIS. Obama could not get any more pathetic.
I know NO ONE wants to talk about that because it might just EXPOSE what country is behind this B.S.
Just running military operations is extremely expensive. There is NO WAY they would have the mobility, weapons and organization without funding. Think about how much it cost just to feed the ISIS army. They are getting funding from another country.
Folks ISIS is nothing but an excuse to go to war in Syria for Saudi Arabia. Just like we did in Iraq. Our troops died for Saudi Arabia to eliminate completion and people that will not play along with the Globalist.
Oh and never mind 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. And people wonder why these radical groups keep popping up. During the second world war that Kamikaze’s went away and soon as Japan surrendered. So obviously we keep going after the wrong countries.
ISIS is well funded, armed and Trained by countries that want our military to be Mercenaries for countries in the Middle East and the Globalist.
Think about it this way....
How come ISIS is so interested in Syria and Iraq just like Saudi Arabia and the United States????
How come ISIS will attack Europe and the USA first, but bypass Israel??? They have to be the ONLY RADICAL ISLAM GROUP that does this. THAT is how you know it's fake.
Common folks this is so easy. Put two and two together.
