U.S. warplanes carried out airstrikes in northern Iraq near ISIS-controlled Mosul Dam early Saturday morning, the Kurdish news agency Rudaw reported, citing eyewitnesses.
CNN confirmed that a U.S. and Iraqi military operation aimed at retaking the country's largest hydroelectric dam from the so-called Islamic State was scheduled to begin early Saturday morning (Friday at 6 p.m. ET).
The operation was to begin with U.S. and Iraqi airstrikes against ISIS positions, with Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces following up on the ground.
U.S. fighter jets began carrying out the strikes early Saturday morning local time, Rudaw reported

The military advisors must have cooked up this attack plan.
We’ll see how it plays out.
Why the unilateral action?
Where are our allies?
Why the rush to war?
Why not give sanctions a chance?
I saw a couple reports here on FR (maybe a week or two ago; sorry, I can’t source a link at this time) that the dam was actually still getting some needed maintenance conducted in lieu of ISIS taking control (continuing maintenance, not ISIS initiated maint).
I wonder if ISIS thinks it will lose control if they don’t blow that damn thing. It is a win/win for them based on their current behavior and I am quite certain they wouldn’t see a loss in creating more chaos.
“Why the unilateral action?

A DEMOCRAT is in charge...
This is HUMANITARIAN BOMBING, and only racists (and quite possibly, EVIL CHRISTIANS) would dare to ask such politically-incorrect questions under a Democrat President!
Isn’t electricity against their religion?
Yep. AK-47’s are haram. Rockets too.
America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!
A-10 attention to their columns would clear this infection up in short order.
“A-10 attention to their columns would clear this infection up in short order.”
But, aren’t we getting rid of those, to free up more money for the EBT Cards of the Democrat Plantation slave voters?
My point well observed.....
Isn’t pretty much anything modern against their religion?
Gee, wouldn’t that be awful if ISIS blows it up?
It’s Libya all over again! How far into the air offensive did we go before we finally had to stop claiming we were just preventing a massacre of civilians? Several weeks I believe.
If they breach it, the first thing that gets wiped out is Mosul. I doubt they’d want to flood their own city.
Wait just a damn minute here. I distinctly remember being told that there is not a military solution to the problem. Say it ain’t so, the Messiah has told a lie!
British sources say SAS on the ground and 8 Tornados in action over Iraq as we speaketh cf guardian & telegraph
But thats only 1 country. We can not operate without the support of the French, Germans, and Russians. Besides, its all about oil and blackwater anyway.
ISIS bad guys should/could have explosive charges ready to go at the base of that big dam.
They don’t have a religion, they have a cult.
I heard Frenchies are rushing HEAVY WEAPONs to the Kurds
Active Duty ping.
RATS can’t GOTV on wars we aren’t in. Why aren’t the RATS trumpeting this?
But the Poles put on a big military parade in Warsaw..
Did you know that all US Military Vehicles left begin in Iraq use the hides of Hogs for upholstery, and Hog lard for lubrication?
I read it somewhere in a comment that somebody said that he thought that he remembered saying to Senator Reid.
If Senator Reid repeats it on the US Senate floor, then it just has to be true.
So why wouldn’t ISIS sabotage the dam if they thought they were about to lose control of it? Thus, Bath House would be an accomplice to the death and destruction which would follow takedown of the dam. Fitting.
Uh, maybe this will cause the ragheads to blow the dam?
The pattern so far is that we come in a day late and a dollar short.
Didn’t Nero just two days ago proclaim our mission of Humanity in Iraq had been completed?
I can only guess.
a) Obama too inept to even try to build a coalition or
b) he failed to build a coalition or
a + b
Bathing and deodorant are against their religion. I”m not so sure about electricity though.
They killed two trucks
Too bad we cannot electrify their showers.
Where is congressional approval???.....oh wait not needed anymore to bomb or invade or start UP a new war.
Where the hell are the nut-less GOP on this? This is not HUMANITARIAN?????
Obama was only going to RESCUE the CHILDREN....
Now we are providing air cover for a countries military that will run at the drop of a hat and rely on it’s women to do the fighting....
Gee, wouldnt that be awful if ISIS blows it up?
Obama fears this. Would not look good if millions of folks are
drowned while he is playing golf or sneaking off with Reggie.
You’re assumiming they use them.
What will be the “world opinion” when a US bomb accidentally blows the dam?
Odd that the “Sunni” ISIS didn’t blow the dam at Mosul (and reportedly, all it would take is to shut down some machines that continuously pump concrete into the eroding bedrock), since most of the population downstream is Shiite. Why, it’s almost as if...
I’d wager ISIS already has the damn rigged with explosives. Like Saddam did his oil wells.
Same as the Amish and our own envirofreeks? So blow it-—all he way back to the rest of the 12th century.
Ah, C’mon, THINK——how the bleep are we going to get the goat humpers into a SHOWER. They’re still skeered of flush terlets.
If I were the US military I would not want to give ISIS time to wire the dam with explosives. This is a hugely important water and electric dam. The disasterous effects would suck us even much more than we already are with rescues and rebuilding not to mention still trying to get rid of ISIS.
not sure, but you might be thinking about toilet paper...or flush toilets...or medicine
My understanding is that destroying the dam would destroy Mosul, which they still hold, as well as Baghdad, which they hope to seize.
Why not give diplomacy a chance? /s
