CORTEZ, Colo. — The Colorado mountain town of Montezuma is suing its 61 registered voters in an effort to sort out the results of an April election that the lawsuit says was filled with errors.

-snip-

Twelve people ran for mayor and Lesley Davis won by three votes. There are claims that second-home owners participated, and Davis says 13 voters and at least two candidates were not residents of the town. She says the lawsuit is the only option to determine how to move forward.

That quote is quite apt here.

This is the sort of crap we get from relaxing voting laws.

We need to go back to the voting laws of the sixties. No provisional voting.

Go to the town hall or county seat to register. Show up with your birth certificate and proof of residency.

Sign an affidavit that your primary residency is the place you are registering to vote.

If there is someone voting where they should not be there needs to be real consequences.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll undoubtedly have occasion to say it again and again: We live in absurd times.

The GOP-e won’t go after vote fraud - the Dhims and the MSM might call them bad names.

Used to be folks pretty much did what was right. They supported lawful behavior. They obeyed the laws.

Today we can’t get folks to use a turn signal.

I think that’s quite indicative of the problem we face.

Illegals pour across the border. Drivers say “screw you” to everone else o the road by not being considerate. It goes way beyond this, but it’s a sign of the problems we face as a society.

Will we have order, or will we basically slip into anarchy to varying degrees.

Laws are not enforced. Law and order is breaking down. Our prisons are full and nobody will build more because it’s too important to give away funds to free-loaders, or special liberal projects.

So we have the criminals back out on the streets. The police lie about crime stats because they have been ordered to.

We will have the society we deserve. Evidently it’s going to get much worse, and I’m not sure it ever gets better.

The Left is all in on the “What’s in it for me” society they have wanted for fifty years.

The right has lost it’s voice as the Republican Party abandoned all pretense of doing what was right.

Elections? We don’t need no stinking organized and legal elections!

I think just a 2nd residence fee would be appropriate. If discovered voting in two different districts because of residences....a simple $15,000 fee to the city or county affected would be ample punishment.

“Laws are not enforced.”

Worse, they’re selectively enforced. They have to be. There are so many laws no human can possibly know all of them. Over 10,000 federal laws alone, and God knows how many state and local laws, not to mention millions of regulation attached to the laws. But that’s the point. If everyone’s a potential criminal, people can be controlled.

I’m doing a lot of quoting on this thread:

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against... We’re after power and we mean it... There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

- Ayn Rand, 1957 -

IMO< that’s were a decent judge comes in. If it’s an unreasonable arrest or citation, the judge should use reason in his judgement.

I once had an officer write me for pulling out of a driveway and using the center median to speed up and merge with traffic.

The officer was a little gung-ho. I went into court and plead guilty with an explanation.

I explained that it was hard to gauge traffic in both direction, and I used the media as a half-way point until I could merge.

The judge saw the reason of it and dismissed the ticket.

It would be best if those old laws were taken off the books. I agree. I don’t necessarily think these laws are used often to screw with people, but I’m sure there are instances where they are.

As I mentioned, this is where a judge should intervene and simply dismiss the case. We shouldn’t have to rely on that.

I don’t necessarily disagree with Rand’s premise here. This is a dynamic at play. I think it actually hits business and corporations worse than individual people, but you guys may disagree stridently.

I don’t think the average guy has any idea how many regulations businesses and corporations are stuck with. AT times you can be in violation no matter which way you go. And that does reveal Rand to be quite accurate.

The legal system has really created a catch-22 situation for many in this nation.

2000 lawyers on the bottom of the ocean... perhaps a few hundred DC types to go with them.
