California is weighing a first-of-its-kind welfare program that would subsidize diapers for needy families, though some lawmakers say the plan's a stinker.
Assembly Bill 1516, written by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, a Democrat from San Diego, would create the taxpayer-backed program within the state's existing welfare network, called CalWORKs (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids). Families that qualify for CalWORKS could be eligible for $80 a month to buy diapers for children under the age of 2.
When you have an identifiable problem preventing women from self-sufficiency and there is an identifiable barrier, shouldnt we help that along when we can? Gonzalez told FoxNews.com.
Gonzalez, a single mother herself, said she first learned that residents cant buy diapers with food stamps from an Eminem song off the soundtrack to the 2002 movie "8 Mile." Under those programs, diapers -- along with cigarettes, alcohol and pet food -- are prohibited purchases.
But a family's diaper budget can easily run as high as $100 a month, depending on the size and quantity.
Still, according to the Sacramento Bee, the legislation comes with a more than $100 million annual price tag.

When we were financially tight, my wife made cloth diapers with a pocket for extra padding to stop leakage. It worked well.
The radical liberals, that continue to be voted in by the electorate, just cannot help themselves.
They never stop campaigning to stay in power by SPENDING our money.
AW GEEZ! Liberals are absolutely nuts!
This is reason number 279 why we need a part-time every other year legislator with a limit on the number of bills which can be introduced. Pass a two year budget and go home.
That’s a good idea.
There were no such things as disposable diapers when we had our kids, we used plastic pants over the diaper.
It should be amazing that people think taxpayers should be footing the bill for literally everything
You got that right, my FRiend!
Just go to the border, they have free diapers & border patrol agents will change them for you! win, win!
Sounds like libtard lunacy but ask any loss prevention manager in a major retailer: Disposable diapers are a hot underground commodity. Might actually cut retail theft.
More welfare.
Because we don’t have enough yet.

May we suggest Sandra Fluke’s Free Contraceptive Program instead? It’s a lot cheaper that the two or three babies wearing diapers in these families. (Kindergarten teachers finally lay down the law about training them when they are 5.)
This is really poopy!
Cheaper to buy them a washer and dryer and install it for them. The bill forgets to also pay for the garbage disposal fees associated with disposable diapers.
Of course if taxpayers bought the washer a dryer then someone would actually have to wash the diapers so I guess I forgot to include the cost of the laundry person and nanny.
When my kids were in diapers there were NO disposable diapers that I recall - we used the regular cloth diapers with the plastic pants over them.
cloth diapers. they can wash them then and reuse. they were good enough for me and my parents as babies.
you’d think the econuts would propose this solution. i know it uses water but plastics in landfills and the ‘ocean garbage patch’ trumps water.
How about having to get a license to have kids. I’m not kidding, you have to pass a test and prove your income to support a child. Talk about “craddle to grave” govt support. Just the RATS buying future votes, AGAIN
Some folks just don't understand the concept of irony.
“When you have an identifiable problem preventing women from self-sufficiency and there is an identifiable barrier, shouldnt we help that along when we can?
Yeah, we got to stamp out self sufficiency wherever we can.
