Kurds want to protect their people and their territory. Beyond that, they don’t care what happens to Iraq.
Thinning out IS’ forces would make it easier to defeat them.

The towns between Mosul and Syria are pretty much useless to the Kurds anyway and too easy to be encircled by ISIS forces. Better to withdraw and make your stand at Dahuk and Kirkuk. If ISIS spreads too thin over that region, the Peshmurga might even be able to retake Mosul.
