Iraq jihadists seize another town from Kurdish forces

Sulaimaniyah (Iraq) (AFP) - Jihadists raised their black flag in Iraq's northern town of Sinjar Sunday in a second straight day of advances against Kurdish forces, sparking mass displacement the UN called a humanitarian tragedy.

The Islamic State's capture of Sinjar raised fears for minority groups that had found refuge there and further blurs the border between the Syrian and Iraqi parts of the "caliphate" which the IS declared in June.

"The (Kurdish) peshmerga have withdrawn from Sinjar, Daash has entered the city," Kurdish official Kheiri Sinjari told AFP, using the former Arabic acronym for the IS.

"They have raised their flag above government buildings," the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) party official said.

Other officials confirmed the fall of the town between the Syrian border and Mosul, which is Iraq's second city and has been the IS hub there since it launched a major onslaught on June 9.

What’s the chance of the Obama administration supporting the Kurds and sending them weapons? I make myself laugh...

Looks like the Kurds are strategically withdrawing. Don’t know why. Maybe to put additional pressure on Baghdad to launch a real offensive

“Maybe to put additional pressure on Baghdad to launch a real offensive”

Like that’ll happen. Iraq is gone. And Obama lost it.

Kurds want to protect their people and their territory. Beyond that, they don’t care what happens to Iraq.

Thinning out IS’ forces would make it easier to defeat them.

Check the map. The town is between eastern Syria (controlled by ISIS) and Mosul(controlled by ISIS). There's no way realistic it could be held.

The main ethnic group in Sinjar (pop. 22,000) is Yazidi, who are mainly Kurdish-speaking pre-Islam Zoroastrians. The Ottomans variously slaughtered and converted them. It now looks like the end of their road at the hands of al Baghdadi.

Perhaps the Islamic State will give them 24 hours to leave town? That’s what happened to the Christians in Mosul.

The New Caliphate “ISIS” has seized some oilfields and is selling the production. We are talking about a million dollars a day that is going directly to the coffers of this virulent anti Christian, anti Western terrorist organization.

Your can not sell oil if you can not get it to market. This means pipelines and pumping stations. It would be very simple to stop this flow. A few cruise missiles will take out those pumping stations. The loss of human life would be very minimal.

My question is why Obama will not shut down a pipeline of oil which is a pipeline of terrorist dollars. ISIS are evil bastards. They will use these dollars to do evil against the people of Iraq and as their leader said, “I will see you in New York.” If their was ever a logical target and easy decision this is it.

Yes, you can rebuild the pumping stations. Yes, we can take them out again with ease. Actually it would be rather difficult to get workers to rebuild them after their former colleagues were killed as they attempted to rebuild the pumping stations. The pumping stations are equipment that comes from the West. We will not send them the parts to repair them. Russia could supply the parts and compressors. Russian equipment blows up just as good as ours when hit with 500 lbs of high explosive.

I ask the following, “Obama, why have you not done this?” “Obama, to whom is your loyalty.” “Obama, where is your anger and criticism of what ISIS has done to the Christians in Iraq.”

“OBAMA WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON, ISIS OR AMERICA?”

Many of the Christian refugees have fled into this Kurdish area. IS wants a blood bath and they’ll get it. A recruiting tool, “You too can be like the Australian Jihadi with a bucket of bloody heads in either hand!” “Kill, kill, kill and then take your new found skills and practice them for Allah in your home country.”
