The U.S. military acknowledged Sunday that an Air Force spy plane slipped into Swedish airspace without permission last month to avoid a possible encounter with a Russian aircraft.
The incident occurred one day after Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was brought down by a missile over eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border. The craft, in which all 298 onboard were killed, was allegedly downed by Russian separatists in Ukraine who were supplied and trained by Moscow.

The maneuver by the U.S. plane was to avoid at least one fighter jet Russia sent to intercept the craft, U.S. officials told CNN on Saturday.
So we now run away from Russian aircraft. This ranks right up there with “shelter in place”.
There was a thread last night that said the Russians were painting it with their fire-control radar, a hostile move. The pilots were right to avoid escalation.
Well!I for one would not want to be the target of a mig 29 or other Russian fighter if I were flying the military version of the Boeing 707.Not only would you be defenceless. You’d be a sitting duck.
More like a dead duck.

That was very smart and sop when your plane is unarmed and a big bulky SMT.
bump
meanwhile Russian planes come within miles of the US coast and buzz our ships and nothing is done either
Just like the old days.
Guilty of not going to the link and seeing a pic. I agree with your explanation.
What the pilot did was SOP for Air Force and Navy Elint intel planes.
Thanks for your service.
“Russian planes come within miles of the US coast and buzz our ships and nothing is done either>”
We are probably doing the same as the Ruskies.
Twice in May and June, my wife and I were enjoying the beach at Bodega Bay, Ca.,. Suddenly, the peace and calm was broken up as a USAF fighter jet cut over us with a really low altitude and headed out SES over the ocean. Both times they appeared to be breaking the Sound Barrier as the planes disappeared from our vision in seconds.
Later, we read about Rusky planes being off our shore during both times.
I doubt it
