If Scotland votes for independence in its referendum on Sept. 18, it may not be allowed to join the European Union for five years.
New European Union chief Jean-Claude Juncker said last night that the EU needs to take a break from admitting new countries. “Under my presidency of the commission, ongoing negotiations will continue … but no further enlargement will take place over the next five years," Juncker said, according to the BBC.
He later clarified his remarks. Juncker wasn't talking about Scotland specifically but about countries generally, he said. Even so, it's hard to see Scotland retaining automatic membership of the EU if it formally leaves its parent country.
The exile period shouldn't be a surprise. José Manuel Barroso, Juncker’s predecessor, said the same thing. It would be "extremely difficult, if not impossible" for Scotland to join Europe, The Telegraph reported.
The statement deals further bad news to the pro-independence "Yes" movement, which wants to separate Scotland from Britain. Currently, pro-union "No" voters have the edge in opinion polls, 45%-34%.

EU should keep Scotland and let England and N. Ireland revert to self-government. Then the EU can send all its Eurotrash refuse to Scotland instead of littering all the parks in London and other major UK cities with homeless encampments. Scotland can be hoist with its own petard.
If the Scots could ever get back to their historical can-do-ism, and they stayed out the the EU, they could probably become one of the richest countries on earth in 5 years. They could be like the Israel of the UK.
But I saw trainspotting, so I’m not too optimistic.

The Scottish National Party already holds seats in Parliament (has for decades), but not many.
UKIP opposes Scottish Independence. And as a conservative party, it has little support in leftist Scotland, it did win a MEP though, because those are awarded by proportional representation. There’s only 1 Tory MP from Scotland. The rest are Labour (huge majority), SNP, and Lib Dem.
Conservative parties are usually unionist, which is foolish of them if you ask me. The only party on the right (although it’s slogan is “neither left nor right, just English”) that is FOR Scottish Independence is the tiny “English Democrats”, who want autonomy or Independence for England from the rest of the UK.
They correctly point that even though Scotland doesn’t want to governed by Labour anymore (as evidenced by an SNP majority in the Scottish Parliament) they still want England to be governed by Labour.
Scotland and it’s socialist MPs should be culled for the good of the rest of the country.
