Whatever Marxist views he may have held, Mandela understood that whites were a necessary part of South Africa and desperately pleaded with them to stay. He granted concessions to prevent them from being impoverished as they had been in Zimbabwe; he clearly understood that the flight of whites out of South Africa was leaving him with a country without doctors, businessmen, and every other profession that separates a modern society/country from nomadic bushmen.
