Al-Maliki rejects calls for unified Iraqi government

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Wednesday rejected calls to create a new national unity government that the Obama administration has been pushing.

"The call to form a national emergency government is a coup against the constitution and the political process," Maliki said in a televised address, according to Agence France-Presse.

"The dangerous goals of forming a national emergency government are not hidden,” he added. "It is an attempt by those who are against the constitution to eliminate the young democratic process and steal the votes of the voters.”

Al-Maliki, however, said he is still committed to launching the process that would form a new government. A parliamentary session would be convened within the next week, he said, that would focus on starting a new government.

"We will attend the first session of parliament in harmony with the constitutional merits and out of the commitment to the call of the Supreme Marjaiya and out of loyalty to our people," he said, referring to country's most respected Shi'ite clergy, according to Reuters.

It’s unclear exactly how al-Maliki, who leads a Shiite-led government, would block political leaders of other sects from joining the new government. Until now, however, he has managed to shut them out.

Secretary of State John Kerry received a commitment from al-Maliki at a meeting in Baghdad on Monday that he would initiate the process by July 1 that would pave the way for a new government.

Kerry flew to Iraq on an emergency trip to stress the importance of Iraq’s Shia, Sunnis and Kurds uniting against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria overrunning parts of Iraq.

President Obama and other administration officials have made it clear that one solution to the current crisis is political reform and unification, but say the United States cannot choose Iraq’s leaders.

Many lawmakers and other officials have said al-Maliki is the roadblock, and should step down.

On Tuesday, the first batch of the 300 military advisers Obama dispatched to Iraq arrived in Baghdad. Their task is evaluating the capabilities of Iraqi security forces.

Maliki figures there’s more money and power to be had hanging on as a propped up Iranian/Shiite puppet than in backing off and letting attempts at unification proceed. Even now.

Only an idiot would think that calling to form a new government in the midst of chaos would happen anyway.

It is however one of the communist goals.

43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.

“The call to form a national emergency government is a coup against the constitution and the political process,”

He is a correct. They have a Constitution that was written under the critical eye of the US and UN. What is done should be under the provisions of their Constitution.

However, under the power of the administration he has wreaked havoc by reducing the effectiveness of the military, purging Sunni generals, firing Sunni bureaucrats, etc.

This part can be turned around, but it is probably too late.

Even if it were a good idea, I don’t think this is the time to do it. Overlooked is the fact that the big Shiite leader in Baghdad has called not only for Shiites but for Sunnis and Kurds to fight against ISIL. Also, ISIL was perfectly happy to kill Sunnis in the (Sunni) area that they swept into first. There probably is a fair amount of unity among people opposed to ISIL.

This fight is only marginally connected to the conflicts between the Sunnis and the Shiites. It’s really an attack upon the very concept of a secular civil government.

I bet the “coalition” that Kerry wants, in all of his naivete (or ill-will) would actually be something where ISIL, which is an international terrorist group and not even Iraqi, would have a dominant voice. In other words, hand over Iraq to AQ while chirping about a “unified government.”

Well, so much for John Kerry’s statement about a unified government. What’s next? Another statement? Maybe he should ask Maliki, “Do you know who I am?!?!!”

Have to see if there's an orange weeping alcoholic in the group, and a bespectacled back-stabbing turtle.

Maliki rejects unity government....that pretty well settles it. Maliki is working for a divided Iraq. He’ll get to be the Shi’ite president of Shiastan. Douri will be president of SunniStan. Kurdistan will survive this time, I think.

I agree with you about it being a bad idea to form a new gov. ISIL-ISIS could not have moved so quickly if Sunnis in the areas they over-ran weren't helpful. A new government would be very vulnerable to including Sunnis who sympathize with the maniacs.

And how could the US or Iraq weed them out? Until ISIS took over a huge chunk of Iraq, we were still arming, funding and training them as "freedom fighters" against Assad (whom we should be working with by now). Their poster boy is that photo-op they had with McCain.

It's just good crisis management. Taking advantage of a situation is what we do, but in a real out of control crisis don't make unnecessary changes with unknown consequences.

Last time I checked, Maliki was the democratically elected president of a sovereign country, under a constitution and system that the U.S. and U.N. put in place. Seems disingenuous at best to demand his departure because the Obama regime flubbed up again.

We’ve never trained or supported ISIS.

Please learn something before making false and slanderous accusations.

we've never trained or supported ISIS

Not as ISIS. We've trained an supported "freedom fighters" in Syria who turned and eliminated less extreme rebels. We've destabilized Syria and given ISIS a place to grow. Now, they're taking weapons we left behind in Iraq, and they move freely across what used to be the border with Syria.

We should've been on Assad's side. We've seen it all over the middle east. There's a reason these countries are run by dictators with varying degrees of ruthlessness. They keep their populations in line.

Assad also supports terrorists. We took the right side, the FSA which is staffed mostly be Syrian military defectors as opposed to political or religious thugs.

You will see in the link I provided that the FSA and its allies have been fighting Assad and ISIS for some time.

Shiite al-Maliki is a puppet of Shiite Iran : on their mutual Islamic Jihad against Sunni Muslims [ ISIS aka : ISIL ], other Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists, as well as everyone else on earth.

They are not peaceful since the 7th Century.
