New NSA chief seeks to reassure public on surveillance
The Washington Post ^ | 6/3/14 | Ellen Nakashima

The new director of the National Security Agency on Tuesday acknowledged that the agency uses facial-recognition tools but said the intent is primarily to identify terrorists and help prevent attacks — adding that such technologies are not broadly directed against Americans.

“We do not do this on some unilateral basis against U.S. citizens,” said Adm. Michael S. Rogers, in some of his first public remarks since taking the helm of the embattled spy agency two months ago.

A year after the first leaks emerged about the scope of NSA surveillance programs, Rogers is seeking to reframe the public debate that has damaged the reputation and morale of the NSA, saying the public needs to understand not just what the organization does but also why it does it and under what limits.

Speaking at a Bloomberg cybersecurity conference, Rogers said the agency does not have access to drivers’ licenses or passport photo databases to search for Americans. The New York Times reported Sunday that the agency harvests about 55,000 “facial recognition quality images” on a daily basis as part of its global surveillance operations....

Please......

We have a president who thinks the Constitution and the average citizen are the two biggest threats to his "Big Government Utopia". We can't be watched close enough in his opinion.

**“We do not do this on some unilateral basis against U.S. citizens,” said Adm. Michael S. Rogers,...**

But you do with the advice and consent of the Executive Branch. That way it’s bilateral instead of unilateral.

Nice try Mr. Rogers. But you can’t fool all the people all the time.

“The intent is only to identify terrorists, such as those people belonging to organizations that use the word ‘tea party’ or ‘patriot’ in their name or who criticize the policies of the president,” said the NSA spokesmen. “No one here would ever in a million years use this against people who are not terrorists.”

Drivers License and Passport photos are unnecessary when there is Facebook and other photo-rich social media sites.

The Chinese can take a photo of someone standing on the street and access their bank account information or hospital records with the digital imagery of the photo.

The NSA can do this too.

“adding that such technologies are not broadly directed against Americans.”

But it is. Almost not doing it is still doing it.

“We do not do this on some unilateral basis against U.S. citizens,” said Adm. Michael S. Rogers

But it is still done.

Cop: You didn’t stop at the stop sign.
Driver: No but I slowed down.
Cop: But you are supposed to stop.
Driver: Stop or slow down, whats the difference?
At that point the cop takes out his blackjack and
starts beating the driver saying “do you want me to stop
or slow down?”

I’ll feel assured when he takes all the curtains and blinds down in his home and all the interior doors off their hinges.

And puts his home phone on outside speaker so we can all hear what he has to say.

Until then...not so much with the reassured.

After all, if he has curtains, what’s he hiding?

The other day in a Kroger, I asked a lady in a uniform which displayed the identity as "Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Services Division", in a State of Tennessee shaped patch.

I asked her what she did in such a department? She explained in a very annoyed response, that the "DMV of Tennessee is now a DHS agency", and "who was I to ask her anything about it?".

WTF?

We are the government and we are trustworthy. We won’t steal your private communications, your emails, your posts, your tweets and save them for years and then go on a fishing expidition and search through them to find out if your ever said “towelhed” or those hate crime words and put you in jail for your hate speech.
We respect the rights of non-Americans, especially those who hate us and have vowed to kill us, because they have dark skin and aren’t Christians or Jews.

Don’t you feel ressured?

I think he doesn’t know what “unilateral” means. No sweat, low information readers will substitute whatever definition makes them feel however they want to feel.

Rogers said the agency does not have access to drivers’ licenses or passport photo databases to search for Americans

But if the just happen to allow the states' DMVs and the State Department access to the NSA's computer programs which convert pictures into facial recognition information and those results just happen to end up at the NSA along with all other personal information, then the NSA has all they want without needing to store the photos.

I wonder if anyone does NOT realize how trivial it would be to add this data? In his defense, ADM Rogers is facing the impossible task of telling someone who knows perfectly well that his government is engaged in surveillance that it isn't really the bad kind of surveillance and he should just relax because we're all good guys here, right? Best of luck with that one.
