It was eleven oclock at night and the lady in front of me in the supermarket line was buying jars of baby food and bottles of Pedialyte. The cashier pulled some of the jars aside and told the lady they werent covered under the WIC program. But you didnt have the ones I can buy, the shelf is empty. I cant buy the other ones because he wont eat them, the customer said.
Im sorry, maybe if you call WIC you can get permission to buy these, but I cant do anything about it, the cashier responded.

So when I began reading Michelle Obamas potato manifesto in the New York Times yesterday, I found myself sputtering and stammering again; but there was nothing quiet about my anger. Institute of Medicine be damned! I grumbled. Why is Michelle Obama writing an opinion piece on white potatoes? Stay out of our lives! Stay out of our childrens lives!

Hmmm...maybe it’s the “white” in “white potatoes” she doesn’t like?
But seriously, potatoes are a basic starch and do have some protein, even the white ones, and they will grow virtually anywhere. Once they were introduced into the Old World, they solved a lot of hunger problems.
The difficulty in the case of Ireland was that the British land policies made it virtually impossible for average Irish poor farmers to grow anything but potatoes, and when the blight came and destroyed the harvests, there was nothing to fall back on. The Irish were quite clever with their land (rock!) management and in the more desolate parts of Ireland, grew potatoes in beds of seaweed laid out on the rocks. But there’s only so much you can do with a monoculture.
There’s nothing wrong with potatoes. I didn’t know Her High and Mightiness had written about this, but since she’s clearly the God-replacement for liberals, I guess the folks at the Times are in there cleaning the potatoes out of their cupboards even as we speak.
Interesting human interest article. Thank you for posting!
The white potato has sustained poor people for centuries. Only an ill-educated brat would rant against this gift from a generous God! And the author is right: for people with stomach troubles, there is nothing more comforting, wholesome and digestable than a baked potato.
Can someone explain the backstory of this? It’s never about the potato; it’s about control of the food supply, right?
He just described the essential character of a socialist.
Paradoxically neurotic with an (often justifiable) inferiority complex, masked in a superiority complex with an obsessive need to dictate and micromanage the lives of others.
Invariably they imagine themselves as of the elite, gifted with a spiritual superiority that grants them the authority to dominate and control.
And here’s the punchline: since others are indifferent to their need to control, telling them to go to hell, in one way or another, socialists need to take over and ration everything of value. Only this gives them the tools to reward their inferiors who remain humble and obey; and punish their inferiors who behave in an “uppity” manner.
When you look at Michelle “Lemongrab” Obama, what you should see is not a slave master, but a self appointed slave overseer. She thinks she can elevate her station by oppressing others.
In this she is mistaken. She will never be more than a dog of a socialist. Her race and gender have nothing to do with it. Her neurotic inferiority complex and her desire to rule over others defines her adequately.
I have a Yorkie that has to be on a fat-free diet.
He absolutely thrives on a diet of nothing ubt turkey breast, potatoes and carrots(sometimes greenbeans).
Since I grow the veggies myself and buy several turkey breasts when they are on sale for $.99/lb, I can feed the little bugger for about $7.00 a month.
you answered your own question.
He who pays the piper calls the tune.
Getting free stuff from the government means that the government chooses what you get or don’t get.

I would recommend those who click on this article to go to the comments section - an extra click. Some of these comments are brilliant and illuminating (particularly about Warren Buffet).
I don’t understand your post and I generally have a good take on FR posts. Are you against the white potato? Or do you think that your Yorkie is more deserving of meat than the author’s elderly parents?
I’m so confused!
I like the way you write and think!
Just pointing out that potatoes can be an essential part of a healthy diet.
That was the point of my original post. And much less obscure.
Happier times:
Once, they just couldn't keep their hands off:
Followed by frustration:
Then the agony. Heartbreak:
Where the heck do you get turkey breasts for $0.99 a pound?
Sometimes there are “Manager Specials” which I always interpret to mean: this is about to cause salmonella so buy it now!
And 99 cents sounds like very little for a bit of butchering. The more you butcher, the higher the cost goes.
Let her eat roasted quail with Creamettes.

Around the Holidays, our local Marsh and Kroger supermarkets have them on sale for $.99-$1.39/lb.
I guess I was just agreeing with you bu using a personal anecdote.
The obscurity may be due to my Posting while on Percocet.
Sorry
