What people seem to not understand is that there is a segment of the population that can not hear and do not understand.
These vulnerable folks should be protected by the police, not executed by them.
Being deaf is not a crime. Tazering someone with a pacemaker can kill them.
Having a gun is not illegal. If you came across a 93 year ol woman with a gun and you told her to drop it, what should your expectation be that she would even hear you? So it’s OK to kill her?
"So there I was... just li'l me against this hulking, nastyass old grandma... And lemme tell ya, ladies, I was scared -- no, no, I admit it! She had that feral glaucoma gleam in her eye, and was baring her dentures... but I braved it all, drew my weapon, and unloaded a heap o' lead right into her -- her one good hip gave out immediately!"
Sure.
And a 93 year old out of touch with reality can shoot people dead.
The whole thing is sad and ugly.
My 93 year old aunt lived in NYC. Nice apartment. But she locked it up.
But like a vault. We called it the vault. Bells, whistles, chains, dead bolts.
She didn’t have a weapon. OUr family would have been embarrassed leaving her with a weapon to defend herself, or endanger herself.
Though I know cops are over zealous some times maybe often and that abuse of authority is bad, and just as deadly.
They say you can get a good measure of a man by how he treats dogs and the elderly.
She was probably bent over and you could only see her eyes.I know a few.
Does the little man shave yet?
They vary a lot. I can recall working at a religious retreat back in the 60s. An old preacher came by and asked if he could get a couple of guys to help clean up the yard etc. at his cabin.
He turned out to be an interesting guy. Both he and his wife were in their 90s and both were in good shape. They went and got hamburgers for us and themselves.
The only thing which made me realize he was so old is he paid us about half what the job was worth, but then again we could probably have told him that was not enough if we wanted to.
I’ve seen lady cops could kick his punk a$$. He was probably scared granny would whoop his butt bare handed which explains his trigger happy nature.
It’s not a good situation.
But you never met miss Lillian. 88 years old. The doc used to have to come to cut her toenails, she was diabetic and she was at risk for losing a foot.
Took eight staff members to sit on her.
You never heard screaming like that. She could bite and punch and scratch.
Oh, I knew one, 91 year old woman, 110 pounds (about). Wacked her nurse with a chair. Did a lot of damage. Spent the night in jail.
They get a paranoid idea and go off.
Though, shooting multiple times, doesn’t sound good.
I have found the Texas Highway Patrol some of the most professional and courteous police anywhere in the nation. Some of the local officers of the law can be bad apples, but the vast majority are not.
We know basically nothing about the cop other than he caused the woman's death. We know basically nothing about the woman other than that she's dead, she was 93 and she may have had a gun.Yes,there are cops out there that are,for lack of a better way to say it, "trigger happy".There are just as certainly some 93 year olds, perhaps even particularly 93 year old women, who are confused and frightened due to a neurological or psychiatric disorder. There's far too little info in this piece to reach any firm conclusions regarding the cop's actions in *this* particular case.
She died of natural causes because, well, she encountered a police officer.
Squeako FTTW!
“Its not a good situation.”
We have had two “officer involved killings” here in Northern California in the town in which I live. Neither was necessaary, but in both cases, the DA called them “justified.” In one instance, a concerned friend called the PD because she had just concluded a telecon with a resident whom she thought seemed very disturbed and asked the cops to check on her to see if she was alright. So the cops paid a visit. The woman (a diminutive Asian) let them in and then ran to the kitchen and picked up a knife. The cops dispatched her on the spot. To my mind, these cretins love the thought of killing another human being. The idea that two 6 ft 250# cops couldn’t deal with a 5ft. woman with a kitchen knife is just a disgrace in and of itself. I wouldn’t pi$$ on any of them if they were on fire.
Agree, though the article does state she allegedly brandished a gun.
I was going with that.
If the cop is a total idiot or a murderous wacko, then I’ll take it back, tough I can’t imagine that’s truly the case.
Just saying that working for the elderly in most settings including elderly relatives, I can say from 35 years of experience, that one with a sudden paranoic episode, can be strong and unpredictable.
And living in Bryan Texas, where guns are as common a household item as a flathead screwdriver, she could certainly have had a gun, and loaded.
But, no, we don’t know.

No difference at all in shooting her than shooting a 5 year old because he/she had a gun...
Absolutely.During twenty years working in an ER I saw more 90 year olds then I care to recall. Some of them were surprisingly sharp and rational. Some of them even appeared to be physically "spry".But I saw far more that were very, very,*very* sad.Trust me...I know all too well that it's pretty easy to come across 90 year olds who are amazing...and *very* easy to come across 90 year olds who are amazingly sad.
If it happened the way you tell it, it is very bad.
Well, there is *one* difference...a 90 year old might have more experience pulling a trigger than a 5 year old.
And I've known many that can still drive safely and still shoot!!
Too bad you've not known any....
