Ukraine's deputy foreign minister said Friday he fears an imminent Russian invasion.
"We have the information we are in danger," Danylo Lubkivsky told reporters at the United Nations.
He spoke as an official in Ukraine confirmed that pro-Russian forces had detained a team of military observers with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The official said the team would be released after further investigation.
Lubkivsky said 20 members had been taken and called it shocking and unprecedented. "We demand to release hostages," he said.
Tensions have spiked as Russia increases military exercises along the Ukraine border. Lubkivsky called it a "very dangerous development" and demanded that Russia withdraw its troops.
"We are going to protect our motherland against any invasion," Lubkivsky said. "We call on the Russians to stop this madness."

Putin and his stooges don’t want free elections in Ukraine because they would lose bad. So instead they send the FSB in to astroturf mayhem in Ukraine. Then they demand a stacked deck: “minority rights” for Ukraine that nobody in Russia gets.
Al Qaeda in Ukraine isn’t winning any votes for Team KGB with all this kidnapping and murdering. Putin has badly overplayed his hand in E. Ukraine.
You summed it up nicely.
Its a bad situation for freedom loving folks in Ukraine with your historic enemy lurking ready to pounce.
Ethnic Russians represent a majority in three eastern Ukraine provinces. They would support independence and, likely, integration into the Russian Federation. Russian tactical support would just be icing on the cake. Putin is playing from popular, demographic strength.
....”Ukraine confirmed that pro-Russian forces had detained a team of military observers with the OSCE in Europe.”...
Wrong!.....
The team they have was and is not OSCE ‘monitors’ but a bilateral Military verification team under the control of Germany... sent under terms of Vienna Document 2011... led by Germans and composed of 8 members 4 Germans, 1 Czech, 1 Danish, 1 Polish, 1 Swedish....
Even OSCE says those in Sloviansk are NOT OSCE monitors but army people sent by EU/Ger/Kiev under Vienna Agreement....but they wrote on the vehicle OSCE.
He's wrong about this team anyway...they weren't OCSE representatives rather a team under Germany's Lead...organized by Berlin and Keiv sitting Government....
The peoples Mayor said clearly that Ukrainian military would not be welcome, only OSCE “observers”...there were 5 Ukrainian military personnel in the vehicle and why they were held. You know at some point the US/EU/nato and Kiev Gov need to hear what these people are saying instead of trying to push the envelope as they're doing....makes me wonder who is really hoping this moves to war.
All one has to do is look how Russia took Crimea...that is a far cry from previous attempts in Chechnya and other Russian wars..... Even our military leaders recognized clearly that Russia has changed their entire military approach....you would see this if you listened to the military leaders speak about this.
Certainly they attempt a profile look-see at Putin's history. and as much some of the hard-liners which remain in Putins cabinet etc. But most of those were weeded out over the years.
Further the International Community would not have included Putin in International affairs as they have for several years now....oil comes into play as well as World Trade issues that weren't there 23 yrs ago...this is a different time in History altogether.
Putin's desire for Russia is no different than the EU/NATO/US alliance for World Power. And up until the Ukraine issue Putin really didn't squawk much about the Baltics going with the Eu .....but he has time and again warned all not to push that envelope...especially regarding Ukraine.
So they did and here we are.....
And if you think the US isn't responsible for this...then take a look how they are bartering US land to China.....land which they acquire in order to barter with...thus you see the Bundy issue today.
I think you are wrong to assume people, who read this situation from the parties involved and what they are doing TODAY, as being for or against either side...though most of us are surely for the US if push comes to shove....which is why most Americans are pushing back that we don't want this Ukraine issue on our plate.....
I'm personally livid that the US has been doing this same type of antics all over the world in order to bring even our own nation under the control of the EU “unelected” Parliament and whatever it will become when this is all set as they want it....and they only go after nations leaders who are not co-operating with their Global Agenda.
You would do all Patriots on FR a great service by stop calling any, who have spent time and effort to find the truth in this situation, various names and the treasonous remarks that you and others tumble out on these threads.
Either we are a “FREE-REPUBLIC” here on FR where we can voice opinions and differ, in order to debate and draw reasonable conclusions....even if we still disagree...or we've lost one of the last places we are indeed free to be so.
I don't like being called a Putinista..nor a traitor...and I doubt any others are either. Sooner or later I will hand it right back to those who continue to do so....for you are trampling on the very freedoms we have and enjoy here....to seek and find the truth even if we may not like what we find.
Well, I guess I'm a paid Putin troll too since I don't see any pressing American strategic interest in getting involved in Ukraine, with which we have no treaty relationship. Moreover, we don't have the military, economic, or political power anymore to do anything about it. It's a European problem, so let them deal with it. Remember when they demanded that "Yankee go home?" Well, they got what they wanted. Now let them reap the consequences.
We have a far bigger problem with the semi bloodless commie dictator that currently occupies the White Hut.
I do not trust the military after zer0 removed real American general officers and the leftist officers and fag lovers took over.
I love America and want to Take Her Back. I will not back any new military actions by the communist buttwad in Washington. He might as well be Castro or Stalin.
Putin is playing from popular, demographic strength.
You have your facts wrong. There have been polls showing only 1/3 of the people in E. Ukraine supported the idea of joining Russia. After all the terrorism by pro-Russians it’s has to be even less. There was a separatist rally today in Kharkiv and hardly anybody showed up. The people in E. Ukraine are definitely unhappy but there is simply no evidence a majority want to join Russia. They are voting with their feet now and staying out of the streets.
Putin does not have popular support in E. Ukraine and his only option left is invasion. Economic warfare will just piss off the Germans and his potential support base in E. Ukraine.
you got it backward........
Putin has 80% support in Russia
I totally agree with your opinion. Obama is no CIC and his actions get soldiers dead.
Putin has 80% support in Russia
What does that have to do with Ukraine? Putin is figuring out now that E. Ukraine is not Russia. He isn’t superman and his plan in falling apart.
There is no genuine popular uprising in E. Ukraine. Had their been the weak Kiev Junta would have been easily ejected. They don’t even have motor oil or food for their army. This should be a simple task to remove the central authorities. That it hasn’t happened shows that what we a seeing is an astroturfed uprising performed by Russian agents.
That doesn’t really matter. Support at home keeps him in power. He has the Crimea. Everything beyond that is gravy
The Russian economy is tanking due to Putin’s adventures. Putting gravy on a stinkburger doesn’t make it taste any better.
you omit time from your equation
The problem is insignificant compared to the prize of Crimea. Time will allow the economic problem to be resolved away.
Here’s the deal for now. Putin will not take eastern ukraine and the dithering west will get to claim credit. Meanwhile Crimea is forgotten and Putin wins
win: win all around
The Obama/Soros/sodomite EU firebomb throwing neo-Nazi coup in Kiev have poked the Bear and now they are crying home to momma. Somebody call the wha-wha-whamublance.
LOL.
When simply blaming Soros is not enough.
LOL—I swear, if these people are so certain about what Soros does, and where he puts his money to such great success, one would think they’d simply mimic his technique and make millions.
How many times are you Putinists going to repeat the lie that there was a coup in Ukraine? Do you think if you repeat it often enough it will become true? The Interim government of Ukraine is the Ukrainian Rada that was democratically elected. The head of state fled the country to a foreign enemy after resigning (though he denies resigning), and the Ukrainian rada, including his own political party, denounced him for his unconstitutional abuses, his treason, his kidnapping and abuses against Ukrainians, and his shooting and murder of them, and took constitutional action to prepare for a new election.
Please stop spreading this lie from the hell hole of the Kremlin!
When is FR going to zot you? The Maidan included ethnic Russian brigades, Ukrainians, Jews, and all sorts of people, from all over Ukraine. Poll after poll in the East show support for a united Ukraine and freedom from Russia. If the Russians do not invade prior to the vote, the East and South will vote overwhelmingly against Russia. And that's why these drunks and thieves and killers, none elected, are trying to hold the East hostage with the support of Russian GRU.
