FLINT -- Three people were arraigned today on charges of child abuse in connection to the Facebook video of a child being beaten.
The mother of the child, 28-year-old Demitria Powell along with 42-year-old Uteas Taylor, and 39-year-old Stefon Felton, all from Flint, were charged with 3rd degree child abuse, conspiracy to commit child abuse in the 3rd degree, and 3rd degree child abuse committed in the presence of another child.
In the 6-minute video, the 11-year-old boy is smacked in the face and hit with a belt more than 50 times.
At least three adults and one infant were present in the room at the time of the beating. On the video, the adults said the boy was being punished for putting false statements on his own Facebook page. The video was shared over 1,000 times before being taken down.
The 11-year-old boy and the infant are both in protective custody.
"The adults in this case clearly went beyond what is a reasonable level of parental discipline," said Prosecutor Leyton. "What the video in this case reveals is a group of adults whose actions were a criminal assault against a child and that behavior cannot be condoned nor allowed under the law," he said.
she informs the crying child that she is going to put the video on Facebook, and that viewers are free to call Child Protective Services if they wish.
She then forces the child to say, repeatedly, that “it’s not cool to be a gangster.”

I was on the kid’s side until reading that...
I get the point but these “adults” are idiots.
They may have gone a bit over the top but putting that online was the biggest mistake.
Many children today are in home situations that would have been considered “abusive” twenty years ago; they are left there due to the soft bigotry of lowered expectations and the fact that the state has no idea what to do with them...
Uteas?
its a no win situation for them....
the video didn't really show anything that I could determine....
not for beating your child but my mother had this old leather shoe...........
the worse thing either of my mom or dad did to me was my mom slapped my face when I was 14....it was humiliating....but that's all it took...
I’m not referring to physical abuse, but the absolute neglect in which so many are raised (the “golden ticket” welfare bastards in particular); they often aren’t “raised” at all, but simply left to fend for themselves.
In a case a couple of years ago in which one of these young children was beaten to death in NYC, it was revealed that a single picture of the child existed. She was born, and lived a few years, just to line the pockets of worthless parents.
Old Amish name. From the Olde Contry, I’m sure.
Demitria, female form of demented?
“Demitria, female form of demented?”
Demitria sounds more like a condition than a name, something one might get from eating tacos made from over-ripe road kill.
Come on people, you all have a computer:
“Demetria
Demetria was the mythological goddess of corn and harvest. American Meaning: The name Demetria is an American baby name. In American the meaning of the name Demetria is: Of Demeter.” (from sheknows.com baby names)
The name is obviously a female version of Demetrius.
I know it’s fun to make light of ethnic names here on FR, but let’s not be completely stupid.
One of the problems in the black community, so to speak (since it’s not a community in any real sense of the word) is that a lot of the child rearing practices are very, very harsh. The parents mean well, but making a kid behave by clubbing or humiliating him into submission really isn’t the way to go about it.
I think a lot of this comes out of the fact that many African American families learned their European child-rearing practices in the 18th and 19th centuries, when a child was considered, particularly in English speaking countries, to be a little demon who needed to be subjected and tamed (hence the different diet, the strange punishments, etc.). This applied across classes and was not something done only by the poor, so probably Africans learned this in fairly well-off households.
But it’s horrible, and while such treatment of a child is ghastly, the parents probably are trying to do the right thing.
What’s truly sad is that the WH - with its semi-African occupant - and the entire US media culture are working against them and trying to make “gangsta” the coolest thing in the universe.
You do not have to take sides to see this is wrong
Arresting name?
:)
Each of those adults should be given 50 whacks with a belt by someone proportionally larger than they are. They may admit it was excessive and just a tad cruel. Hopefully, they won’t ever return the children to Demented.
Sad thing is, for every overreaction like in this case there are literally hundreds of underreactions in disciplining problem youts now.
One is criminal, the other just makes criminals. Either way we all have to pay for it one way or another some day.
