ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts.

A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products — carries elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health disorders...

“carnivorous diets rich in fruits and vegetables”

Wouldn’t it be easier to just say “omnivorous diets”?

Exactly. People who load up on meat are probably less healthy than people with a diet balanced with meat, vegetables and fruits and grains. Going to one extreme or another isn't natural. The body needs all of the food categories in moderation.

I think they have the cause/effect thing confused when discussing mental disorders here

"Vegetarians may have a lower BMI"

often a meaningless indicator. Since I work out a lot and have a large muscle mass my BMI puts me just a hair beneath "obese" although I have less than 10% body fat. You can't make this stuff up - the government would call me "obese" but anyone who saw me would call me "ripped".

If you’d left out the grains, I’d have agreed with you. But grains (even “healthy whole grains”) are pretty much empty calories.

Vegetarians Less Healthy, Lower Quality Of Life Than Meat-Eaters

This is news? Daughter of a wife's friend went full vegetarian some years ago. She wasn't all that attractive to start with, but after a couple of years she resembled something found in Dachau and her hair started falling out. After quite a while of her trying to figure out what was wrong with her (after all it couldn't be her idiotic diet) she went back to limited meat and voila her problems mostly went away.

I posted this yesterday as I found the link very ironic:

The following is a list of vegetarians who were also killers:

Pol Pot, Vegan despot and mass murderer

Charles Manson - Vegan Animal Rights Activist

Adolf Hitler - Vegetarian megalomaniac mass-murderer

Genghis Khan - Vegetarian Marauder and Rapist

“... vegetarians may drink alcohol sparingly..”

Funny but I know several vegetarians and two vegans.. they all drink wine. A LOT of wine. Wine each night and not just a glass of it either.

Vegetarians also tend to be more gullible. But you can tell them because their ears often don’t match from behind, and they look funny when walking away from you.

I try to stay low carb, and when I do fall off the wagon I just feel like crap afterwards. Foods with natural sugars (fresh fruits and veg, whole milk unflavored Greek yogurt, etc.) don’t bother me. Neither does dark chocolate nor wine. Grains are a different story though. With this economy, I find myself cooking pasta way too often.

And this: http://www.policymic.com/articles/86477/chemists-have-discovered-marinating-meat-with-beer-can-curb-cancer

Having received scientific evidence of the cancer-reducing properties inherent in beer-marinated meat, as published in a journal of the American Chemical Society, will the first lady demand that beer-marinated meat be included in the nation’s school lunch program?

Sounds to me like they’re being religiously vegetarian - ie, trying to fill the hole in their heart with something besides Who fits there.

I have a friend who is a strict vegetarian and she has a full head of red hair. I decided to stop eating meat a few years ago and it made me sick. I never felt worse in my life and I feel sure if I had kept it up I would have lost my hair and died.

We are all different in the way we react to things.

The article does a good job in pointing out the other habits of vegetarians that could lead to health problems. Many people who become vegetarians compensate for calories by eating more breads and pastas. Just terrible for a plethora of health issues. Studied vegetarians understand this an increase intake on vegetables and fruits. However, over consumption of vegetable is not good for digestion leading to serious blockage issues that are common in vegan diets. Fruits high on the glycemic index are about the same as pasta and bread. So as you point out, moderation and balance.

Vegetarians violate Darwinian law. Most are not only fools but agnostic nihilists. The power and influence they have achieved has harmed the world. Their passing is unlamented and predictable.
