Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker on Thursday signed a measure into law that eliminates absentee voting on weekends ahead of elections but vetoed a provision that restricted weekday voting hours across the state.
Wisconsin law allows voters to cast absentee ballots by mail or hand them in to their polling places before election day. Supporters have said the new law creates uniform and fair rules, while critics have said it disenfranchises voters.
Walker, a Republican who is seeking re-election, vetoed a part of the bill the majority Republican legislature approved that capped voting at 45 hours per week. Voting will be allowed only on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at clerks' offices.
Voter rights have become a political and racial flashpoint across the United States. Democrats generally oppose measures that restrict voting, saying they disenfranchise minorities and young people such as college students. Many Republicans back them, saying they are needed to combat voter fraud.
Supporters of the Wisconsin measure said it eliminated an unfair advantage for larger municipalities such as Milwaukee which have the money to keep polls open longer, giving their residents more of a chance to vote.
"The legislation gives local governments the needed flexibility while maintaining fairness in our elections," Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said.
United Wisconsin, a voter advocate group, said it was disappointed that Walker did not veto the entire bill.

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
GOOD!! Early voting is just ANOTHER opportunity for Dems to cheat!
Have voting for two days.....Monday and Tuesday. Create new voting places if necessary.
Also, no votes to be opened/counted prior to end of election hours.
People sending in votes allows for the opportunity to throw votes away. They know whether the votes are registered Dems or Repubs. How many Repub votes disappeared. If you think election folks are all honest...we have enough experience to say they are not.
Also...old people...no one who has "a guardian" can vote. Hell, my mom was sure she was still voting for FDR and knew NOTHING about abortion. A typical elderly sheepster.
The onus needs to be put on these people to prove their claim. I surmise that it is nothing but a red herring, that there truly are none 'disenfranchised' but it is simply an easy nebulous target that supporters of voting laws such as what Gov. Walker just signed into law, or voter ID laws.
The Democrats turn in thousands of absentee votes, many bogus, the weekend before Election Day when there isn’t time to check out their legitimacy. This helps, but actually, NO early voting ought to be allowed. Absentee ballots should be mailed in and verified 21 days preceding the election. And voters should have their finger put in indelible purple ink, a la Iraq, to eliminate multiple voting and voting by the dead.
Yes, that would cut down on Democrat voting by fraud.
Wisconsin does not require voters to register for a specific party. There is nothing in the poll books indicating party preference. I’ve used absentee voting when I’ve been out of town for an election. I try to be in town on voting days, though, because I’m an election inspector.
NO “vote early, vote often” FOR YOU!
hm... you know... I fully support voter ID laws especially ones where they have to prove their citizenship to vote with REAL proof, not just a water bill or something silly like that. But I dont think I support making it harder to vote.
BUT, you can’t have one without the other.
If you are not going to have strong laws protecting us from voter fraud then you shouldn’t make it easier to cheat.
Fixed it for you. (I won't even bother to address the Democrap party's assertion that blacks are too stupid to get a picture I.D.)
“Supporters of the Wisconsin measure said it eliminated an unfair advantage for larger municipalities such as Milwaukee which have the money to keep polls open longer, giving their residents more of a chance to vote.”.......
“giving their residents more of a chance to vote more often”. (There, fixed that).

Thanks afraidfortherepublic.
All this just amazes me. For many, many years everybody that wanted to vote voted only on election day, generally at the public school nearest their home. Establishments that sold alcoholic beverages were closed until after the polls closed. We didn’t even have absentee voting.
People who want to vote will figure out a way to make it happen.
“Stop all unnecessary absentee voting and early voting...except for military.”
I’d be happy if they’d just get the ballots to military members ON TIME and then actually COUNT THEM! Grrrr!
Yes they will, Grams. It is a PRIVILEDGE to Vote, and IMHO NOT an option. Be there, vote and quit your bitchin’ when your side loses a round.
The Madistan Hippies NEVER adhere to that, though... ;)
He should have signed it as it was sent to him. This just allows more fraud in Milw and Madison.
If the Dems get their way everything will be decided by Twitter plebiscite.
